Take That's tipsy comeback

Take That were reunited by vodka.

It was always believed the British boy band - Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Jason Orange - got back together in 2005 after they filmed a TV documentary, but the band have now revealed they got the idea after an evening of drinking.

Mark told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "We only came back to do the 10-year documentary and to talk about what had happened and where we were now. Because of the feedback we got from that, people started saying would we tour again?

"Then one night me, Gary and Howard went out for a drink - and we had a couple of drinks - and we thought, 'We can do it!'

"We were in the bar singing, 'All I do each night is pray... '

"We were a bit drunk and we phoned Jason, I think he was at a wedding, and we said, 'Jay, Jay, we've got this brilliant idea.' "

Songwriter Gary added: "I attribute it to drink."

Take That originally split in 1996 - a year after Robbie Williams left the group - after becoming the most successful boy band in UK history.

Since their reunion they have released two UK number one albums and three UK number one singles.

The band's forthcoming tour, in support of their latest album 'Circus', recently sold a million concert tickets in record time.

Drew Barrymore believes people are just "fields of energy".

The 'He's Just Not That Into You' actress insists everyone has the choice whether they are happy or sad.

She said: "I like projecting positivity. I believe that we are all fields of energy and you have the choice whether to be a positive or negative field of energy. I know that sounds hippie-ish but it's what I believe fundamentally. So you could be a bag of toxicity, or you could be a happy, good person that spreads joy. I believe in spreading joy."

The 33-year-old star - who completed two stints in rehab during her teenage years and has been divorced twice - insists she is living proof tough times can make people stronger.

She added to People magazine: "Everybody goes through hardships and it's your choice how to deal with them. Your choice should be to progress and to evolve, and to handle things with some level of graciousness.

"Yeah, life is hard sometimes - but I think you probably have to just realise, you know, that someone is probably experiencing something more difficult and to please work past it as expediently as possible."

The 46-year-old actress - who is married to Ashton Kutcher, 30 - is determined to keep her body in the best shape possible, so thinks nothing of splashing out on expensive fitness trainers and gym memberships.

Revealing Demi's keep-fit regime includes help from a personal trainer who coaches her through a combination of circuit training, weights and Pilates, a source revealed to America's OK! magazine: "The cost per year is in the six figures."

Demi - who wowed onlookers with her toned, slim line physique on the set of 2003 movie 'Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle' - denies ever resorting to plastic surgery to help her gain her enviable figure, and those close to her maintain she simply leads a healthy lifestyle.

Her hairstylist Tara Smith explained: "No one has better hair than Demi. It's naturally jet black, not one grey! I attribute it to her healthy lifestyle. She drinks loads of water, eats greens and seaweeds. She doesn't carry a lot of stress."

Her make-up artist Erin Ayanian Mon was equally as glowing, explaining: "She has flawless skin. There's nothing to cover up. We just give her skin a glow with a creme blush and use a lot of sunscreen."

However, Demi has previously revealed one secret to her good looks - she covers herself in blood-sucking leeches to help keep her skin looking fresh.

She said: "Yesterday I was considered soft porn, but today I am art. I have an eclectic group of friends. I like people who can feed your soul." Vivienne asked Pamela, 41, to appear in the campaign after the pair met at her Spring/Summer 09 show in London last September.

Madonna's Ritchie weekend

Madonna and Guy Ritchie have spent the weekend together in New York. Guy met his ex-wife Madonna at the New York Kabbalah centre just a few days after the singer won custody of their children.

An onlooker said: "Guy was smiling and in good spirits. He still spends time with Madonna as a family." This was reportedly the second weekend in a row the estranged couple have met at the Kabbalah centre with their children: Rocco, eight, adopted son David, three, and Madonna's daughter Lourdes, 12.Guy's father, John Ritchie, has recently said the couple are maintaining an amicable relationship because of their children, but he is delighted Madonna is distracting herself with "lots of boyfriends".

The protective father, 79, said: "The worst thing would be if they reconciled." Meanwhile, the marriage of one Madonna's reported love interests, baseball star Alex Rodriguez, has officially ended.

Documents issued at a US county court stated his marriage to Cynthia was "irretrievably broken". Rodriguez - known as 'A-Rod' - split from his wife of five years in the summer, following reports the sportsman had been dashing out for night time visits to Madonna's New York apartment.

Emma Watson's sexy confusion

Emma Watson finds being called sexy "embarrassing and confusing".

The 18-year-old actress - who plays Hermione in the 'Harry Potter' film franchise - does not want to be known for her looks, and has no interest in starring in raunchy photo-shoots.

She said: "I find the whole concept of being 'sexy' embarrassing and confusing. If I do an interview with photographs people desperately want to change me - dye my hair blonder, pluck my eyebrows, give me a fringe. "

Then there's the choice of clothes. I know everyone wants a picture of me in a mini-skirt. But that's not me. I feel uncomfortable. I'd never go out in a mini-skirt. It's nothing to do with protecting the Hermione image. I wouldn't do that."

Emma adds she does not think women needs to dress in revealing clothes to look attractive, adding it often has the opposite effect.

She explained: "Personally, I don't actually think it's even that sexy. What's sexy about saying, 'I'm here with my boobs out and a short skirt, have a look at everything I've got'? My idea of sexy is that less is more. The less you reveal the more people can wonder."

Nicole Richie's life "reads like a train wreck", according to her father Lionel.

The 59-year-old singer - who is Nicole's adoptive dad - admits he was "worried" about his daughter when she was arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana and painkiller Vicodin in 2006, but is delighted with how she has turned her life around.

He said: "I was worried about her. I mean, her life story reads like a train wreck, but she has amazing powers of recovery. She went through her drug period, then came back to centre. She went through a car accident, then came back to centre.

She went through arrest, back to centre. Her ability to get through it and recover is amazing." Lionel, who is divorced from Nicole's adoptive mother Brenda, adds he is not sure he was the best father to Nicole - who has one-year-old daughter Harlow with her partner Joel Madden - as he often had to miss family events due to work.

He explained: "Because of the nature of my business and the fact that I travel so much, when I'm asked, 'Can you make it to the dinner party?' I don't know. 'Can you make it to the family reunion?' Well let's go back and look at my track record. For 20 years, the answer was: I never made one."

LOS ANGELES – "Girls Gone Wild" founder Joe Francis was arrested by U.S. marshals on Monday when he arrived five hours late to a court hearing over a request by his law firm to withdraw as his legal counsel in a tax case.

U.S. District Judge S. James Otero issued a warrant for Francis' arrest on Monday morning, when he failed to appear for the hearing at the set time, said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Francis finally arrived at the hearing in the afternoon, indicating he was suffering from the flu, and U.S. marshals arrested him, said defense attorney Melissa Weinberger.

Weinberger said that she would try to have Francis released after he is processed.

Francis became a multimillionaire by selling the "Girls Gone Wild" videos of young women baring their breasts, usually at parties with free-flowing alcohol. He could not be reached for comment on Monday.

He is facing charges in a tax evasion case which was filed in 2007 by authorities in Nevada but transferred to L.A. because that is where he lives.

Francis is accused of failing to pay taxes on more than $20 million in business expenses. The tax trial is due to start in March. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.

loss of her rights to administer her own affairs. [Agencies]

Pop star Britney Spears will cancel her 'Circus' tour unless her children can accompany her.

Britney is so desperate to be near her children she is intending to set up bases for them in New Jersey, New Orleans and Los Angeles so she can visit them in between shows.

She will also pay for her ex-husband's accommodation. It is claimed the singer has further agreed to pay Kevin over $4,000 a week during the tour so he can stay near the children, although his lawyers are reportedly opposed to the plan. After shows in North America, Britney is set to perform eight concerts in London, England in June.

Rock fans head to Iowa to recall day music died

Flowers adorn a memorial, Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at the spot where the plane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. [Agencies]

CLEAR LAKE – It's been 50 years since a single-engine plane crashed into a snow-covered Iowa field, instantly killing three men whose names would become enshrined in the history of rock 'n' roll.

The passing decades haven't diminished fascination with that night on Feb. 2, 1959, when 22-year-old Buddy Holly, 28-year-old J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and 17-year-old Ritchie Valens performed in Clear Lake and then boarded the plane for a planned 300-mile flight that lasted only minutes.

"It was really like the first rock 'n' roll landmark; the first death," said rock historian Jim Dawson, who has written several books about music of that era. "They say these things come in threes. Well, all three happened at the same time."

Starting Wednesday, thousands of people are expected to gather in the small northern Iowa town where the rock pioneers gave their last performance. They'll come to the Surf Ballroom for symposiums with the three musicians' relatives, sold-out concerts and a ceremony as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame designates the building as its ninth national landmark.

And they'll discuss why after so many years, so many people still care about what songwriter Don McLean so famously called "the day the music died."

"It was the locus point for that last performance by these great artists," said Terry Stewart, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. "It warrants being fixed in time."

Clear Lake is an unlikely spot for a rock 'n' roll pilgrimage — especially in winter. The resort town of about 8,000 borders its namesake lake, and on winter days the cold and wind make the community 100 miles north of Des Moines anything but a tourist destination.

The crash site is on private property, a five-mile drive from Clear Lake and half-mile walk off the road. Corn grows high in adjacent fields during the summer, but in winter the fields are covered with snow and a path to the small memorial is often thick with ice. The memorial features a small cross and thin metal guitar and records, all of which are draped in flowers during the summer.

"It's a much nicer trip in the summer," said Jeff Nicholas, a longtime Clear Lake resident who heads the Surf Ballroom's board of directors. "But in the winter, you get more of a feel of what it was like."

No one tracks the number of visitors, but fans stop by throughout the year and on some summer days visitors to the crash site can create the oddity of a corn field traffic jam.

Stewart said the deaths still resonate because they occurred at a time when rock 'n' roll was going through a transition, of sorts. The sound of Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Holly was making way for the British Invasion of the mid-1960s.

"The music was shifting and changing at that point," he said. "The crash put a punctuation point on the change."

All three musicians influenced rock and roll in their own way.

Holly's career was short, but his hiccup-vocal style, guitar play and songwriting talents had tremendous influence on later performers. The Beatles, who formed about the time of the crash, were among his early fans and fashioned their name after Holly's band, The Crickets. Holly's hit songs include "That'll Be The Day," "Peggy Sue" and "Maybe Baby."

Richardson, "The Big Bopper," is often credited with creating the first music video with his recorded performance of "Chantilly Lace" in 1958, decades before MTV.

And Valens was one of the first musicians to apply a Mexican influence to rock 'n' roll. He recorded his huge hit "La Bamba" only months before the accident.

The plane left the airport in nearby Mason City about 1 a.m., headed for Moorhead, Minn., with the musicians looking for a break from a tiring, cold bus trip through the Upper Midwest.

It wasn't until hours later that the demolished plane was found, crumpled against a wire fence. Investigators believe the pilot, who also died, became confused amid the dark, snowy conditions and rammed the plane into the ground.

The crash set off a wave of mourning among their passionate, mostly young fans across the country. Then 12 years later the crash was immortalized as "the day the music died" in McLean's 1971 song, "American Pie."

Vonnie Amosson, who manages the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in Clear Lake, said that ever since the plane crash, the community has embraced the tragedy. It's a continued stream of tourism dollars, and the town's chamber of commerce estimates that this year's events, dubbed "50s in February," will generate more than $4 million for Clear Lake's economy.

"It's kind of sad that that is what we are known for," Amosson said. "But on the other part of it, I think the whole '50's in February' weekend is a huge memorial and it's an honor to them."

In part because of its role in rock history, the Surf Ballroom has retained its vintage look, with a 6,000-square-foot dance floor, ceiling painted to resemble a sky, and original cloud machines on either side of the room. Ten Buddy Holly banners line the wall opposite the stage. The 2,100-capacity ballroom still hosts many national and regional performers, most of whom add their names to a backstage wall that is now crowded with drawings and signatures.

"It's quite a special place," said Nicholas, the Surf board member. "This place looks just like it did in 1959."

Paul McCartney to headline Calif.'s Coachella

British singer Paul McCartney takes to the stage to collect the Ultimate Legend award during the MTV Europe Music Awards ceremony in Liverpool, northern England, November 6, 2008.[Agencies]

LOS ANGELES Paul McCartney will headline the opening day of the Coachella music festival in California this spring, the singer's Web site said on Friday.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, held in the sparsely populated California desert, began in 1999 as a place to showcase mostly alternative rock acts aimed at young fans. But in recent years it has grown into one of the largest music events of its kind with a wide array of singers and bands.

The 66-year-old former Beatle will top the bill on April 17, followed the next day by U.S. rock band The Killers and by British group The Cure on the festival's third and final day.

"I have heard that Coachella is one of the greatest festivals in the world. I'm really excited to get out there and rock!," McCartney said in a statement.

McCartney in November stole the show at the MTV Europe Music Awards, when he accepted an Ultimate Legend prize from the pop channel in his home city of Liverpool, England.

McCartney last September played in Israel for the first time under tight security, in a show described as a make-up concert from when the Beatles were blocked from the Jewish State in the 1960s.

The bill for this year's festival also includes embattled British soul singer Amy Winehouse, Canadian-born icon Leonard Cohen, and the band Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Thriller "Taken" snatches box office crown

Actress Maggie Grace in a scene from 20th Century Fox's "Taken". [Agencies]

LOS ANGELES - Thriller "Taken," starring Liam Neeson as a former spy who must rescue his daughter from modern-day slave traders, snatched the No. 1 spot at North American box offices over the weekend, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

"Taken" grabbed $24.6 million in just under 3,200 theaters, for an average of about $7,700 per theater, and it played to a mix of men and women, said a spokesman for its distributor, 20th Century Fox. Fox is a unit of News Corp..

With the media's spotlight on professional football's Super Bowl, overall weekend ticket sales of $103 million for the top 12 films were off 20 percent from the last weekend, and only slightly ahead of the same weekend last year, according to box office tracker Media by Numbers.

Still, January proved to be a record month in theaters with a total box office haul of more than $1 billion for the first time ever, said Media by Numbers president Paul Dergarabedian.

One big reason has been the surprise success of Columbia Pictures' comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," which slipped to the No. 2 spot after two straight weeks at No. 1. The movie starring comic actor Kevin James took in $14 million over the weekend, boosting its three-week total to $83.4 million.

Columbia Pictures said "Paul Blart" was well on its way to passing the $100 million mark at box offices as it continues to play well to audiences looking for laughter. Columbia is a unit of Sony Corp's Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Landing in the No. 3 spot was the new supernatural thriller "The Uninvited" with $10.5 million. It was released by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc..

The other fresh entry in theaters was romantic comedy "New In Town" starring Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick, Jr. But it failed to ignite much of a flame with movie fans, coming in at No. 8 with only $6.8 million. It was released by Lionsgate Entertainment.

Other notable movies were Paramount comedy "Hotel for Dogs," which finished in the fourth spot with $8.7 million, and Clint Eastwood's popular "Gran Torino," which was No. 5 with $8.6 million to push its cumulative total to $110.5 million.

Finally, Oscar hopeful "Slumdog Millionaire," whose director Danny Boyle won the best film award from the Directors Guild of America on Saturday night, added more than 200 theaters over the weekend and raked in $7.7 million to push its overall ticket sales above $67 million.

"Gran Torino" was released by Warner Bros., the studio wing of Time Warner Inc., and "Slumdog Millionaire" came from the Fox Searchlight division of News Corp..

Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ross McCall reportedly split after she demanded a high-profile wedding.

The 'Ghost Whisperer' actress - who became engaged to the Scottish actor in November 2007 after nearly two years of dating - was believed to be adamant the pair should sell the rights to their nuptials, but Ross was against the idea.

A source said: "They had a massive fight over the wedding plans. Ross felt he was being exploited by Jennifer because she was planning to sell their wedding pictures to a celebrity magazine.

"And when she told him she even had plans to sell the rights to their bachelor and bachelorette parties, Ross hit the roof!"

Friends of the couple remain hopeful they will give their romance a second chance, although Ross has made it clear he does not want his private life to be played out in public.

The source added: "Friends are hoping they'll reconcile.
