Movie Review :

The great Renaissance man Gilbert Keith Chesterton once wrote, "No good deed goes unpunished."

Simply put, if you do something nice, something awful will happen to you. We’ve seen examples of this in cinema, the most memorable of which is "Pay it Forward," an Oscar-bait picture about a boy (then "it" star Haley Joel Osment) who attempts to do good deeds to help make the world a better place. Ultimately in the finale (spoiler ahead), the young boy is stabbed to death by an angry schoolmate.

So that brings us to the latest example of "no good deed goes unpunished," Will Smith’s "Hancock" follow-up, "Seven Pounds." The film follows an emotionally distraught IRS agent, Ben Thomas, as he mysteriously attempts to help several people with their life-long problems, with seemingly no real reason behind why he’s doing such things.

The film moves at a mystifying pace, slowly unraveling the tightly wound knots of Grant Nieporte’s complicated, twist-driven script. While the technique of slowly unveiling the narrative can often prove tedious, the film is wonderfully anchored by Gabriele Muccino’s taut and exciting direction, often infusing intensity where none would normally be present.

Adding even more weight are the near-perfect performances from Will Smith and Rosario Dawson. Smith plays Ben Thomas as an emotionally complex, angst-filled man whose mysterious past outweighs any of his good deeds. Smith does a fine job with the role, but his angst-addled characters are starting to feel a bit cliché. This is the fourth film in a row where Smith exploits this character trait. He’s a wonderful actor, destined for Oscar greatness, but I’d love to see a broader range from him.

Dawson plays Emily Posa, a dying heart patient that Smith’s Thomas chooses to help. The script plays to Dawson’s strengths, once again allowing us to see that glowing free spirit we fell in love with in Kevin Smith’s "Clerks II." The chemistry between her and Ben Thomas is quite tangible, giving gravity to their unusual romance.

The film really only faults as it approaches the final act and plot threads begin to show serious signs of wear and tear. In one such subplot, Smith’s Thomas gives a Latino lady his luxurious ocean-front beach house, but never does the script mention how this obviously poor woman will be able to afford the astronomical property taxes of such an estate.

When we finally reach the last act, the film takes a dark turn as the plot twist secretly controlling the film is revealed. I won’t spill the beans here, but this element proves to be the film’s most detrimental flaw, relating directly to the quote used above.

Why must the film punish it’s viewers for falling in love with Emily Posa and Ben Thomas? The film wants us to leave the theater inspired, but its ending is counterproductive of such a fate. In the end, the film proves immensely moving, and remarkably entertaining, but hardly inspirational at all.

"Seven Pounds" isn’t as drastically manipulative as "Pay it Forward" mostly because the performances and script feel far more genuine. But this manipulation gimmick ultimately bread a bad taste in my mouth for the film, long after my tears for the characters had been wiped away. For many, this film will probably work. Smith gives yet another rock-solid performance and he’s paired with several equally solid costars. It tugs at your heartstrings and will easily drive most audiences to tears while providing a decent night’s entertainment. But the film tries too hard to inspire us and ultimately fails to do so. If "no good deed goes unpunished," then what is the point of it all?

Synopsis :

Freddy Rodriguez, John Leguizamo, Debra Messing, Alfred Molina, and Elizabeth Peña star in Washington Heights director Alfredo de Villa's earnest family drama about the importance of familial relationships in times of personal crisis. The snow is falling and Christmas has come to Chicago. For the Rodriguez... family, there is particular cause to celebrate this year; youngest sibling Jesse (Rodriguez) has recently returned home safe and sound after fighting in the war overseas. But as the members of the Rodriguez family converge on their parent's home, there's a strange sense of tension lingering heavy in the cool winter air. Despite the fact that Jesse is doing his best to get back in the good graces of his old flame, she seems reluctant to forgive him for leaving in the first place. Meanwhile, his older sister, Roxanna, has little to show for time spent chasing her Hollywood dreams, and eldest brother Mauricio (Leguizamo) is married to a high-strung executive who seems more interested in advancing her career than starting a family. But while none of this sits too well with concerned mother Anna (Peña), the bombshell she's about to drop could prove the straw that broke this family's back. When Anna announces to her children that she is planning to divorce their father, Eduardo (Molina), Roxanna, Jesse, and Mauricio instinctively pull together and begin to reevaluate their past while looking at the future in a whole new light. Later, as lingering resentments are let go and weakened bonds are reaffirmed, the Rodriquez family begins to experience the healing power of laughter while discovering that together as a family they are far stronger than they ever could be apart. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Movie Review :

By Kirk Honeycutt

Bottom Line: A Merry Puerto Rican Christmas is served with a dash of melodrama, a pinch of comedy and a dose of sentimentality.
Falling somewhere between a telenovela and a sitcom's big holiday show, "Nothing Like the Holidays" mixes family melodrama with the good cheer of the season, all with a distinct Latin flavor. For the Rodriguez clan hails from Puerto Rico even if Chicago is their longtime home -- and few of the actors actually are Puerto Rican. Every family member brings in his or her own subplot, which plays out Christmas week in the Windy City's Humboldt Park district given over to street carolers, midnight masses and jolly parties.

Like last year's black Christmas comic melodrama "This Christmas," "Holidays" aims for an ethnic audience but plays its hand broadly enough that everyone can join in on the festivities. With such name actors as John Leguizamo, Freddy Rodriguez, Debra Messing and Alfred Molina providing the outreach, this Overture release should enjoy a solid theatrical run followed by substantial video and cable play in subsequent holiday seasons.

Director Alfredo de Villa ("Washington Heights") has demonstrated an affinity to urban life and Latino culture, but here he allows himself a bit of a holiday while remaining firmly in touch with those twin milieus. The situations tend toward contrivance, but the atmosphere is easygoing and the actors seem relaxed even when everyone at the family table is yelling.

For the first time in years, the whole family turns up at the generous, homey domicile of Eduardo (Molina) and Anna Rodriguez (Elizabeth Pena). This includes son Jesse (Rodriguez), just back from a tour of duty in Iraq that left him with an eye wound, and daughter Roxanna (Vanessa Ferlito), absent three years in pursuit of a Hollywood career.

Jesse must struggle over his still-smoldering flame for Marissa (Melonie Diaz), who has moved on since he left her, and the loss of a buddy for which he feels responsible. Roxanna is torn between the comforts of home and the sudden interest of childhood friend Ozzy (Jay Hernandez) as well as her so-far futile struggles as an actress.

Older brother Mauricio (Leguizamo) and wife Sarah (Messing) arrive from high-power Manhattan lifestyle with questions over when to start a family driving a wedge between them.

But all these melodramas pale in comparison to the surprise the parents have in store. Mom announces she wants a divorce. Dad's response is strangely diffident, thus betraying -- at least to the audience because no character seems to pick up on it -- that he is hiding something.

No story line in Alison Swan and Rick Najera's screenplay is left dangling by the end of Christmas. Family triumphs, love is affirmed and everyone looks at life anew. Okay, real life doesn't work that way, but it should and does in sentimental holiday movies.

You do sort of wonder though if the Rodriguezes might not invite us all back next year. No doubt everyone again will be in a tizzy.

Avril Lavigne fires manager

Avril Lavigne has fired her manager and management company.

The 'Girlfriend' singer is said to be distraught that her latest album and tour proved less popular than her previous efforts, and blames Nettwerk mogul Terry McBride for her lack of success.

A source told gossip blogger Perez Hilton: "Avril is hoping that new management can help her new album be more successful than the last."

The 24-year-old - who is desperate to resurrect her career - has reportedly now signed a new deal with Irving Azoff and his management company, who look after Christina Aguilera and Guns N' Roses.

Meanwhile, Avril has prompted rumours she is expecting her first child with musician husband Deryck Whibley after she was seen refusing alcohol during a recent night out.

Avril - who recently sparked reports she could be pregnant after she was photographed with what appeared to be a baby bump - was spotted drinking only soft drinks at exclusive Hollywood night spot Coco De Ville.

Avril, wearing a loose jersey shirt, stuck close to Deryck throughout the evening, with the pair making a hasty exit when other partygoers recognised her.

Lustful Madonna offends God, says Chilean clergyman

U.S. singer Madonna performs on stage during her "Sticky and Sweet" tour at Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires December 5, 2008.[Agencies]

SANTIAGO – Pop star Madonna's antics are lustful, a stain on humanity and offensive to God, a retired Roman Catholic cardinal said on Wednesday during a mass for the late Chilean military dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet.

Madonna performed in Santiago on the Latin American leg of her Sticky and Sweet Tour to promote her album "Hard Candy."
"The atmosphere in our city is pretty agitated because this woman is visiting and with incredibly shameful behavior provokes a wild and lustful enthusiasm," Cardinal Jorge Medina told the congregation.

"Thoughts of lust, impure thoughts, impure acts, are an offense to God and a dirty stain on our heart," Medina said in his homily marking the second anniversary of Pinochet's death.

The conservative prelate is reviled by some Chileans for his close ties to Pinochet, who died in 2006 without facing trial for the fate of 3,000 people who died or disappeared during his 1973-1990 rule.

Sci-fi fan Keanu Reeves jumped at alien role

Actors Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly (L) and Jaden Smith (C) arrive for the premiere of the film "The Day The Earth Stood Still" in New York December 9, 2008.[Agencies]

LOS ANGELES – Keanu Reeves admits to being a big science fiction fan, so when offered the chance to play an alien for new movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still," Reeves said he jumped at it.

But before his fans think the "Matrix" star has signed on for just another big-budget space flick that is long on action but has little to say, Reeves wants them to know this remake of a 1951 cult classic speaks to today's audiences.

The movie is released in U.S. theaters on Friday.

"It's about the world we live in and the destructive nature of man, so it gives you a lot to think about," Reeves told Reuters. "It's very timely."

Growing up in the 1970s, the Canadian-born Reeves, 44, said he loved the "Stars Wars" movies and read books like "1984" and "Brave New World." As an adult, Reeves has always wanted to play characters in sci-fi films.

He burst into the limelight in an escapist fantasy, 1989's "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure," as one of two bumbling, time-traveling teenagers, and throughout his career he has worked in the genre in films such as "Johnny Mnemonic."

Even love story "The Lake House" had a supernatural element to its tale about two people living in different time periods who trade letters dropped into a mailbox.

By far, Reeves' biggest foray into sci-fi was the three "Matrix" movies in which he portrayed a computer hacker who is suddenly thrust into the role of being humanity's savior from machines that rule the world. The trio of blockbusters raked in more than $1.6 billion in global ticket sales.

But Reeves calls his new "The Day the Earth Stood Still" more than a standard sci-fi film.

"It's also a suspense drama, and it hopes to entertain in a "lets-go-to-the-movies-and-eat-popcorn way," he said.

The star - who claims he has to say 'yes' to "most things" girlfriend Jenny McCarthy asks him to do - also described the moment when he fell over and broke three ribs on set.

He added: "I changed the plan in my head. I had the pratfall ready to go but I thought, 'What if I get all my limbs in the frame at the same time?' I was worried it would look more like a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

Jennifer Aniston weekends with...Brangelina?

Nobody knows this, but Jennifer Aniston is friends with Brad and Angelina.

"The funny thing is that people don't realize we all go away to the Hamptons on the weekends," Aniston says in the new issue of GQ.

OK, OK…she's joking.

"But can you imagine?" Aniston asks writer Mark Kirby. "That'd be hysterical: I've got Zahara on my hip, and Knox…"

Joking aside, she once again explains that she and her ex-husband do speak from time to time: "When there's something to congratulate or celebrate, there's always an exchange."

What does she have to say about John Mayer? And how about the jab she takes at Jolie? Keep reading...

She calls Mayer an "extraordinary musician" and says "it's just great to sit and be witness to that."

As for their on-again, off-again relationship, she admits, "We care deeply for each other, and we're just trying to figure it out."

Asked about pregnancy rumors, she's quick to say, "I am not having his baby. And I have not popped the question."

She doesn't have much to say about Jolie, but offers some bite when talking about Jolie's much-dissected public revelations that she and Pitt fell in love during the making of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. "Considering the source," Aniston says, "nothing surprises me."

On the business front, it sounds like she'd consider going back to television—at least for Tina Fey.

"That to me, is an ideal job: great cast, New York City," she says about the possibility of her 30 Rock guest spot becoming more permanent. "We'll see what I say if they come back and ask me—I wouldn't say yes, I wouldn't say no."

Tom Cruise gets restraining order against man

LOS ANGELES – A judge has granted Tom Cruise a restraining order against an Iraq war veteran who brandished a gun near a freeway and later tried to hand-deliver a letter to the actor, an attorney said on Thursday.

Edward Van Tassel, 29, wanted to get the letter in Cruise's hands to enlist him in the cause of helping other veterans, said the former soldier's attorney, Robert Landheer.

Van Tassel went to Cruise's Beverly Hills mansion on December 3 and again on Sunday in an attempt to deliver the letter, Landheer said.

On Wednesday, Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge George Eskin issued the restraining order to prevent Van Tassel from approaching Cruise or his residential property.

"He's coming home like hundreds of other veterans, wounded and suffering from whatever kind of scarring that is," Landheer said.

A representative for Cruise was not immediately available to comment.

Authorities arrested Van Tassel last month on weapons charges after an incident near Santa Barbara, northwest of Los Angeles, in which he stood on a freeway overpass with a gun and a sign in what his attorney described as a protest.

Following the arrest, he was sent to a veterans' hospital in Los Angeles, but left the facility when he tried to deliver the letter to Cruise.

Van Tassel has been sent back to the hospital where he is receiving psychiatric care and is no longer permitted to leave the facility, Landheer said.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Desperate Housewives" in 2012?

Series creator Marc Cherry let slip Wednesday that he is in talks with ABC about continuing the hit comedy-drama for another four seasons.

"I started recently talks with (ABC Entertainment president) Steve McPherson and (ABC Studios president) Mark Pedowitz about continuing the show for a ninth season," Cherry was quoted saying at a cake-cutting ceremony for the show's 100th episode. "We're going to find a way to make it work."

ABC confirmed the plan but stressed that no deals have been made.

"Housewives," now in its fifth season, is yet to be renewed beyond May.

For the past year, Cherry had been saying publicly that he intended to set a firm end date for the series after seven seasons.

On Wednesday, he acknowledged that he recently had changed his mind as the show rebounded creatively and ratings-wise this fall, ranking as ABC's top scripted series.

"The five-year jump seems to have reinvigorated interest in the show, and the ratings are terrific," Cherry said, referring to the show's story leaping five years into the future.

NASHVILLE (Billboard) - Bon Jovi was the top touring act in 2008, just ahead of Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, according to sales data collected by Billboard.

Bon Jovi's Lost Highway trek through North America and Europe, grossed $210.6 million. Springsteen's Magic tour pulled in $204.5 million. The survey covers the period November 14, 2007, through November 11, 2008.

Rounding out Billboard Boxscore's top 10 were Madonna ($162 million for the still-underway Sticky & Sweet tour), the Police ($150 million on the second leg of their reunion tour), Celine Dion ($91 million), Kenny Chesney ($86 million), Neil Diamond ($81.2 million), Spice Girls ($70 million), Eagles ($56.6 million) and Rascal Flatts ($55.8 million).

For the overall touring industry, grosses reported to Billboard Boxscore totaled slightly less than $4 billion worldwide, the most ever for a year and up almost 13% over last year.

But global reported concert attendance was virtually flat, with 6% fewer shows. And North American concert attendance was down nearly 2%, after a nearly 20% decrease last year, continuing a troubling trend.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Tom Cruise, publicly maligned for over-the-top behavior in two TV interviews, has admitted to People magazine he could have "handled things better" and even joked about his couch-jumping antics on Oprah Winfrey's talk show.

Cruise's admission comes three years after he leapt onto a couch on Winfrey's daytime chat show in front of millions of viewers and proclaimed his love for then-girlfriend Katie Holmes. In a separate incident, Cruise got into a testy exchange over psychiatry with Matt Lauer on "The Today Show."

"I think I could have handled things better," Cruise told the magazine in an interview for its December 22 issue.

Cruise called the incident on Winfrey's show, "My year of jumping dangerously," in a comedic reference to "The Year of Living Dangerously," a novel turned into a 1982 movie.

The 46 year old stars in the upcoming film "Valkyrie," which opens on December 25 and chronicles a failed German assassination attempt of Germany's Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

In recent years, the actor's public image has taken hits from detractors over his vocal support for the Church of Scientology, whose adherents oppose psychiatry.

He called psychiatry "pseudo science" in his 2005 interview with Lauer, when the actor was asked about his public criticism of actress Brooke Shields over her use of medication to treat postpartum depression and reacted by calling Lauer "glib."

On the Lauer interview, Cruise told People, "All I want is to help people. I could have communicated it in a way that was better, no question."

People, with Cruise on the cover, features the actor in photos spanning his entire 25 years as a movie star, going back to the 1983 film "Risky Business."

The photos show Cruise with his wife, Katie Holmes, their daughter, Suri, and his adopted children, Bella and Connor.

They also show images of actors with whom Cruise has co-starred, including Brad Pitt and the late Paul Newman, who died in September at age 83 after a battle with cancer.
