Ronnie Wood's US Christmas
Ronnie Wood is spending Christmas in America to avoid his family. The Rolling Stones guitarist, who left his wife Jo for 20-year-old Russian waitress Ekaterina Ivanova in the summer, wants to avoid a family row during the festive season.
A source told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "Ronnie has flown to Los Angeles. He doesn't want to get caught up in family feuds over Christmas. He thinks it's for the best for all concerned. Jo was a devoted wife and mother for so many years and the family have rallied round her since Ronnie's affair came out. "He feels that if he was around for Christmas it would just cause too much trouble. So he'll be hanging out in Los Angeles instead."
Ronnie and Jo's children Leah and Tyrone - who have struggled to come to terms with the end of their parent's 23-year marriage - are spending Christmas with their mother in the UK.
Speaking about her festive plans, Jo said: "I've got 20 people coming over for late lunch. I'm going to be doing the cooking but I've got Leah and her husband Jack helping me too. "We call Jack 'Captain Cuisine' and so the three of us get in the kitchen and we all do different things. So, I'll be cooking and slaving away in the kitchen. Everybody will be there. It'll be great."

Robbie Williams' mother flight
Robbie Williams has flown to Britain to be with his mother, who is in a "critical but stable" condition following a heart bypass operation.
The 34-year-old singer - who is currently living in Los Angeles with actress girlfriend Ayda Field - is determined to spend every second with 67-year-old Jan, the inspiration behind his hit single 'Angels', as she recovers from the intensive surgical procedure in a Cheshire hospital.A source, who revealed Jan had the operation Dec.21, said: "Like any patient who has undergone major heart surgery, Jan is not out of danger yet. She is in a critical but stable condition, but that is normal for such a complex procedure. "Jan was put in intensive care immediately after the operation, where she will be monitored extremely closely.
She will almost certainly spend Christmas Day in hospital, but if all goes well she might be discharged by New Year. Robbie is desperate to make sure everything goes to plan." Robbie has been told by doctors the earliest he can see drink-and-drug counsellor Jan is later yesterday.
The source added to Britain's The Sun newspaper: "If there are no complications, Jan will be released onto a specialist cardiac ward today, and Robbie may be able visit her then.
The doctors will assess her progress on a daily basis to make sure her recovery is going well. "But any major surgery carries risks and Robbie will understandably be concerned for his mother. It won't be an easy Christmas for him."

Britney Spears' family New Year
Britney Spears is forfeiting a night out on New Year's Eve to look after her children.
The pop star is set to stay home on December 31 with sons Sean Preston, three, and Jayden James, two, while their father Kevin Federline - who has sole custody of the children - parties with new girlfriend Victoria Prince in Las Vegas.
A source close to Britney and her ex-husband Kevin told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "Kevin has been getting on much better with Britney recently, so he didn't want to risk setting their relationship back by mentioning Victoria.
"And he knows she's desperate to see the boys over Christmas, so he's letting her visit them at his home over the festive period.
"He then added she could have them on New Year's Eve, as if it was a great favour."
It was recently revealed that the 27-year-old singer - who is currently enjoying a successful career comeback following the release of her new album 'Circus' - has asked Kevin to rekindle their relationship and move back in with her.
However, Kevin is apparently not interested in giving their romance a second chance.
He said recently: "There were times when I was up and down about it, but I just figure I've made all the right decisions."

Madonna's Jesus love
Madonna is reportedly having a fling with a Brazilian male model. The '4 Minutes' singer met Jesus Luz in Rio de Janeiro while on a shoot for American magazine W, and the pair became so close she invited him to join her on the Sao Paolo leg of her 'Sticky and Sweet' world tour.
A source told the New York Post newspaper: "She was very interested in him. He's there with her now and photographer Steven Klein is helping him get along with everyone." Madonna and Jesus reportedly struggled to keep their hands off each other when they met, and did little to hide their fledgling relationship from onlookers.
Another source said: "Everyone knows they are ficando - which is a Portuguese expression that means they are kissing and doing other things but without any obligation of being faithful or getting into a relationship afterwards."
Meanwhile, Madonna is said to be "thrilled" at reports her estranged husband Guy Ritchie is dating Jemima Khan. Guy and Jemima - who was previously married to Pakistan cricket legend Imran Khan and dated Hugh Grant - attended a dinner party together earlier this month.
The pair also went to a star-studded Christmas bash over the weekend, where other guests included Stella and Mary McCartney, Lily Allen, Sir Mick Jagger and Kevin Spacey. A friend of Madonna said: "It's not like she's asking him for details, but she's thrilled at the prospect of him moving on. It makes things easier for everybody."

Pop stars Vie to play Bruce Lee
Jay Chou (left) and Aaron Kwok are both in the running to play the ultimate martial-arts icon Bruce Lee in a possible sequel to "Ip Man". [Photo: ent.sina.com.cn]
(Shanghai Daily) He lists Jet Li as one of his idols; penned a song called "Nunchucks" and his most recent movie is called "Kung Fu Dunk". Now he's in the running to star as the ultimate martial-arts icon - Bruce Lee.
Hong Kong director Wilson Yip said Monday that he's considering Taiwan pop sensation Jay Chou for the role of Lee in the sequel to his recently released film "Ip Man", a biography of Lee's kung-fu master.
Also in his sights to star as the king of kung-fu cinema is another singer-turned-actor, Hong Kong's Aaron Kwok.
"Aaron Kwok will bring his unique qualities to the role of Bruce Lee. Jay Chou will bring his unique qualities. I will prepare a different script for each actor and see who is interested," Yip told The Associated Press.
He said Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen would reprise his role as the title character, Ip Man.
"Ip Man" is based on the life of the legendary master of wing chun -- a kung fu style that traces its roots to a monk from the famed Shaolin Temple.
The film ends with Ip's move from his hometown of Foshan to neighboring Hong Kong. It was in Hong Kong that Ip met 13-year-old Lee and took him under his wing.
Yip said the follow-up film will focus on Ip's relationship with his most famous disciple.
Polly Chan, a publicist for Hong Kong's Mandarin Films Ltd, confirmed that the company has plans to make a sequel but the final decision depends on the box office results for the original.

Aniston and Wilson explore marriage in "Marley & Me"
Cast members Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson pose at the premiere of the movie "Marley & Me" at the Mann Village theatre in Westwood, California December 11, 2008.[Agencies]
LOS ANGELES - In their new film "Marley & Me," Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson pick up where most couples in romantic comedies end -- at the start of a happily-ever-after marriage.
The movie, which opens Christmas Day, follows John and Jenny Grogan as they evolve from career-focused newlyweds to parents of three young children. It afforded both actors the challenge of making the ins-and-outs of married life look as exciting as any over-the-top boy-meets-girl comedy, they said.
"It was refreshing to read a story about a marriage and not be the traditional romantic comedy with some high-concept plot to see how the guy's going to get the girl or how the girl's going to get the guy," Aniston told Reuters in a recent, joint interview Wilson.
"You know, she's leaving for Antarctica. He has to take a boat there to get her," Wilson joked, to emphasize the typical high-concept Hollywood romance.
"This movie is picking up where we're together. And then how do you make that work and make that interesting?" he said.
In "Marley & Me," directed by "The Devil Wears Prada" director David Frankel, the chase scenes and action sequences come in the form of the couple's dog, a rambunctious yellow Labrador named Marley who they dub "the world's worst dog."
But the movie, which is based on the autobiographical bestselling book of the same name, is less about Marley than about his owners, the Grogans, as they struggle with balancing their growing family with their career ambitions. Both are journalists at competing newspapers in Miami.
It's those themes of marriage and family that Aniston and Wilson said they think audiences will find identifiable.
"It's a reminder for people if they are questioning or if they are going, 'why am I in this?' ... through those hard times you keep remeeting and remarrying, and that's sort of the beauty of sticking to it."
Wilson, best known for playing offbeat characters in slapstick comedies like "Meet the Fockers," "Wedding Crashers" and, most recently, "Drillbit Taylor," said he welcomed playing a more believable character.
"It was nice to do a movie that everyday when you showed up to work it was like 'Okay, I can believe the stuff that I'm doing,'" Wilson said.
Aniston was effusive about Wilson's performance, saying audiences will see a new side of him as an actor.
"You're such a brilliant comedian but you're just also an extremely deep," she said to Wilson. "You have such a well of emotion that is untapped. You are untapped talent, Owen!"
Aniston, too, is known for comedic turns during ten seasons on the blockbuster television sitcom "Friends" and films "The Break-Up," "Along Came Polly," and "Bruce Almighty."
Both actors, however, said they never thought of themselves as comedians before hitting it big.
"I don't know how I ended up working on a lot of comedies because I had no standup comedian or class clown type background," Wilson said.
"Join the club, honey," Aniston cut in. "I'd be doing Chekhov and they'd be chuckling. I'd be like 'What the hell are you laughing at?'"

Court agrees to pay Spears' father $75/hour
LOS ANGELES – A court has put a higher value on being Britney Spears' father this year: about $75 an hour.
For helping his daughter through her turbulent period, Jamie Spears on Monday was awarded an additional $51,000 payout, reflecting an increase in his monthly payments since he took over his 27-year-old daughter's affairs in February.
Jamie Spears had been receiving $10,000 a month for his work, but Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz increased that amount to approximately $16,000 per month and agreed to give him backpay.
He was also granted an additional $1,200 monthly payment so he can maintain and office, which Goetz said was justified by his work getting his daughter's personal life — and music career — back on track.

More than just playing soldiers
Assembly transformed a little-known actor into one of China's hottest movie stars. Actor Zhang Hanyu has already earned four best-actor awards for his role as soldier Gu Zidi. But the rise to fame has been a long march for the 40-year-old actor.
"An ordinary soldier makes the story extraordinary. He lingers deeply in my soul. And the role is one I had been waiting for years," Zhang says. "I find my inner Gu Zidi from the film. His firm honesty, dignity and honor was just what I was looking for."
Zhang majored in performance at the Central Academy of Drama but after graduation in 1988 could only find voiceover work on foreign films.
In 1999 Zhang met director Feng Xiaogang and became a regular fixture in his trademark New Year films, such as Sorry Baby, Big Shot's Funeral, Cell Phone, and World Without Thieves. He played small roles, in fact, his characters didn't even have names, but he used these on-screen opportunities to polish his skills. When the opportunity came he would be ready to seize it.
"It is wonderful if you can be the center of the spotlight. But there is always someone who serves as a backup, and these roles are crucial to the story," he says.
He says all those small roles of different classes of people prepared him for the role of Captain Gu, a brave soldier seeking recognition for his comrades who died during the Chinese civil war.
In Assembly there is death, promises and life-long friendships. Snow falls, cold air chills, deadwood gathers, walls crumble, bullets fly and blood splashes bringing to life the savagery of war.
The narrative spans over 20 years, and Zhang reveals the different faces of his character at various stages in life.
"Psychologically and physically, Gu went through a lot. I kept on thinking what supported the man to be so determined and brave," he recalls.
It was a risky choice to cast Zhang as the leading role in such a big-budget film, but when Zhang read the script, he told the director that he was ready. So were Chinese audiences. The box office revenue for Assembly has already topped 260 million yuan, the highest-ever for a Feng film.
Zhang calls it a real China war epic and all Chinese people should be moved by it.

Heard around the world
From Yellow Children, her first album, to United Nations goodwill ambassador, Zhu Zheqin has come a long way.
The singer, also known as Dadawa, made a two-year journey of Tibet autonomous region, then made her voice heard around the world when she released the Tibetan-inspired album Sister Drum in 1995.
Singer Dadawa has a new role working to advance the cultural legacy of minority groups as a goodwill ambassador for the UN. Guo Yingguang
She then delved further into the world's minority groups and told her story in the 2006 documentary The Journey of Sound. It revolves around South Asian music, and includes street, gypsy and religious music.
Now she has a new role, working to advance the cultural legacy of minority groups as a goodwill ambassador for the UN.
The singer will work with the United Nations Development Fund (UNDP) to help save and develop the cultural legacy of China's minority groups, from 2009 to 2010.
"I hope that I can act as a conduit, that I can be the person who tells some of these (people's) stories," Dadawa says. "My travel experiences to see these minority groups and the things I've seen in my life have led me toward this."
Dadawa is always on the road. She has visited almost all of the Chinese ethnic groups during the past decade. In addition she has traveled from Kashmir to Delhi and Varanasi in India, to Nepal, then across the Himalayas and back to Tibet.
Because of the Tibetan style of her music, many people think she is Tibetan. In fact, she was born in Guangzhou and was discovered by He Xuntian, a Shanghai music professor who had been collecting Tibetan music for 20 years.
Her first album Yellow Children (1992), recorded in China, was well received. She is also popular in the West.
Her love of Tibet led to her taking the stage name Dadawa, which means moon in Tibetan. When she returned to the region last year she made her album Seven Days, in which she expressed a whole new type of Tibetan music, a music that is related to Tibet in a spiritual way.
She met with Khalid Malik, UN resident coordinator in China, when she visited Shangri-La, Yunnan province, back in 2006.
"Dadawa's contribution to the development of ethnic groups' music and her passion for those areas attracted us," Malik says. "She will not only help with the music part but also promote cultural diversity and local economies."
The project will combine two parts: One is saving and developing local music, and the other is supporting the trade in local handicrafts.
"Ethnic minority groups have the most original music. From their way of singing to their musical instruments, I am fascinated by it," Dadawa says. "While protecting these treasures from extinction is important, we need to consider how to reinvent and develop this music today."
Together with 10 other musicians worldwide, Dadawa will visit Xinjiang, Qinghai, Tibet, Yunnan and the Inner Mongolia autonomous region to collect music samples and re-make them. "Good music should be heard by today's listeners rather than just be put in museums."
As for promoting local handicrafts, Dadawa is in love with the clothes of ethnic groups and will, for instance, wear a long skirt with a pair of boots from Inner Mongolia.
She says that during her travels she has collected many exquisite hand-made products, from accessories to home decoration.
"I have bought lots of local hand-made clothes and cushions. In my eyes, they are fashionable and comfortable. Why not let more people know about them and buy them? Then local people can have more income to solve their poverty problems," she says.
For today's celebrities, charity work is almost as much a part of the job as walking the red carpet. They have become linked with preventing domestic violence, curing breast cancer, gender issues and saving farms from development.
For Dadawa, her new title is an honor and she now wants to raise public awareness of her various causes. "It (the title) has an impact on the people who see it," she declares. "The more people, the bigger the impact."
"We believe in working with people directly. She's a very profound singer and I was touched by her commitment to make sure she used her gifts for Chinese minority groups," Malik says.

Kate Winslet's sex relief
Cast member Kate Winslet poses with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio at the premiere of the movie "Revolutionary Road" at the Mann Village theatre in Westwood, California December 15, 2008. The movie opens limitedly in the U.S. on December 26.[Agencies]
Kate Winslet couldn't wait for her latest sex scene with Leonardo DiCaprio to end. The 33-year-old actress - who first starred alongside the handsome actor in 1997 epic 'Titanic' - admits her steamy scenes in new movie 'Revolutionary Road' were "too weird".
However, it wasn't her shyness or the crew members looking on that upset the blonde beauty - it was her husband, the film's director Sam Mendes, shouting instructions in the background.
Kate explained: "Sam was saying, 'OK, Leo, press your fingers right into her back, hard. Grab her butt, Leo.' All I could think was, 'Please let this be over soon'."
Kate, who worked with Sam for the first time on 'Revolutionary Road', also revealed she feared her spouse would be upset seeing her simulating sex with another man.
She said: "You know, 'What if we had a row at home and have to go to work the next day?' But if we have a disagreement, we are quite good at getting through it quickly and being very honest and married about it."
Actors Leonardo DiCaprio (L) and Kate Winslet are shown on the set of the Dreamworks Pictures film "Revolutionary Road" in this undated publicity photo released to Reuters November 25, 2008. The film received a Golden Globe nomination as best motion picture drama when nominations were announced December 11, 2008 in Beverly Hills. Carrey's 'Yes Man' earns aye vote with $18M debut
Jim Carrey lies down on the red carpet as he arrives for the U.K. premiere of 'Yes Man' in Leicester Square, central London December 9, 2008.[Agencies]
LOS ANGELES – Movie audiences greeted Jim Carrey and Will Smith with a lukewarm "yes' as snowstorms undermined weekend debuts from both stars.
Carrey's comedy "Yes Man" opened at No. 1 with $18.2 million in ticket sales, while Smith's drama "Seven Pounds" came in second with $16 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Debuting at No. 3 with $10.5 million was Matthew Broderick's animated family flick "The Tale of Despereaux."
The new movies arrived in theaters Friday just as storms pounded the Northeast.
"Those markets back east just got hammered," said Chris Aronson, distribution executive for 20th Century Fox, whose sci-fi saga "The Day the Earth Stood Still" slipped from No. 1 to No. 4 with $10.2 million. The movie starring Keanu Reeves raised its 10-day total to $48.6 million.
"Yes Man," released by Warner Bros., stars Carrey as a loser who turns his life around by subscribing to a philosophy of saying "yes" to everything. Sony's "Seven Pounds" casts Smith as a mysterious IRS agent doing good deeds for strangers, and Universal's "Tale of Despereaux" features Broderick as the mouthpiece for a tiny mouse on a heroic mission.
In limited release, Mickey Rourke's acclaimed drama "The Wrestler" had a heavyweight debut, taking in $209,474 in just four theaters for a whopping average of $52,369.
By comparison, "Yes Man" played in 3,434 theaters and averaged $5,288 per theater, while "Seven Pounds" opened in 2,758 and averaged $5,801 per theater. The No. 3 film "The Tale of Despereaux" played in 3,104 theaters and grabbed $3,385 per venue.
The film released by Fox Searchlight stars Rourke as a former wrestling champion struggling for one last taste of past glory. The comeback theme of "The Wrestler" parallels Rourke's real life, with the actor in the running for an Academy Award nomination after his bad boy behavior virtually ruined his career in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
While winter came in with a bang, Hollywood's solid year was going out with a whimper. The overall box office plunged for the second straight weekend as this season's pre-holiday offerings continued to lag far behind the strong finish provided by such 2007 hits as Smith's "I Am Legend" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks."
The top 12 movies took in $82.8 million, down 44 percent from the same weekend last year, when "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" led with $44.8 million.
The last two ho-hum weekends have hindered Hollywood's shot at breaking the domestic revenue record of $9.7 billion set last year. Revenues through Sunday were at $9.24 billion, virtually even with 2007 through the same date, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers.
Given the sour economy, studio executives generally are satisfied with this year's results. Hollywood tends to ride out recessions with solid business, since movies are relatively inexpensive compared to entertainment options such as concerts or sports events.
"The movie business may be recession-proof, but this weekend, it's not weather-proof," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.
1. "Yes Man," $18.2 million.
2. "Seven Pounds," $16 million.
3. "The Tale of Despereaux," $10.5 million.
4. "The Day the Earth Stood Still," $10.2 million.
5. "Four Christmases," $7.7 million.
6. "Twilight," $5.2 million.
7. "Bolt," $4.3 million.
8. "Slumdog Millionaire," $3.2 million.
9. "Australia," $2.3 million.
10. "Quantum of Solace," $2.2 million.

Jennifer Lopez's rocky marriage
Jennifer Lopez's four-year marriage to Marc Anthony is at "breaking point".
The singer-and-actress was spotted without her wedding and engagement rings at a recent Los Angeles premiere, and Marc has also been enjoying nights out without his ring.
Marc, 40, further fuelled rumours the pair's relationship is on the rocks when he was seen flirting with women in New York and Las Vegas nightclubs and moaning Jennifer had been "making me miserable".
A source, who claims the couple are at "breaking point", said: "They both didn't wear their rings on purpose. Nothing Jennifer does is without purpose. They are both getting bored. She wanted this domestic life, but now she's bored out of her mind. She wants the old J-Lo back."
Jennifer, 39, is also said to be becoming increasingly frustrated with Marc's "controlling" nature - he insists on picking her clothes and checks up on all her phone calls.
A source told America's Us Weekly magazine: "He's very, very controlling of her. The skirts aren't as short. You don't see so much of that booty anymore."
Things have become so strained between the pair - who welcomed twins Max and Emme into the world in February - Jennifer is hardly even talking to her husband.
The source explained: "She walks in from work, washes her hands and grabs the babies. With him, it's almost like, 'Ugh, they're crying again?' "
Jennifer also blames Marc for her career stalling and is particularly bitter about the failure of 2006 movie 'El Cantante' which the couple starred in together.
The source added: "She looked around and said, 'This is my life now? I'm a Long Island housewife?' She hates that everything she worked for went down the tubes."
The couple - who renewed their wedding vows last month - did their best to quash the rumours earlier this week when they went out for dinner at Beverly Hills restaurant Luau.
The enjoyed a meal of meatballs, ribs, tiramisu and chocolate cake and left holding hands.
Marc's publicist has denied their marriage is on the rocks, insisting: "They're doing great."

Emma Watson's worthless wealth
Cast member Emma Watson poses with the character of Despereaux at the premiere of the movie "The Tale of Despereaux" at the Arclight theatre in Hollywood December 7, 2008. The movie opens in the U.S. on December 19.[Agencies]
Emma Watson has "no need for money in her life".
The 'Harry Potter' actress - estimated to be worth £13 million - will never agree to star in a film purely for financial gain.
Emma, 18, said: "The wealth side of it hasn't hit me yet because I have no need for money in my life. My life will not be motivated by money.
"I will never do a film because they're going to pay me a certain amount of money. It's liberating. It means I can hopefully make great choices."
The British actress also insists she has not adopted a lavish lifestyle despite starring in six 'Harry Potter' films, and still uses public transport.
She added to USA Today newspaper: "I have a more normal life than people expect. When I take public transport, people are like, 'That girl looks like the girl from 'Harry Potter', but it can't be her on the train.'
"I get stopped by people, but that's fine. I'd never want to be so famous that I couldn't live a normal life to a certain extent. I can't imagine anything lonelier, just not being able to be part of the real world and being trapped and locked in hotel rooms and cars."
Emma lends her voice to the character Princess Pea in new animated film 'The Tale of Despereaux' which opens in European cinemas from Friday.

Paris Hilton's customised Pink Bentley has arrived.
The hotel heiress recently received delivery of the car - a Christmas present to herself worth an estimated $200,000 - fulfilling a childhood fantasy of owning a vehicle like children's toy doll Barbie.
She said: "I've just always wanted a pink car. I think when you're a little girl and you have the Barbie corvette you're always like, 'Oh I wish I had a car like this one day', so I think it just comes from being a fan of Barbie for so long.
"This is a car that I cannot drive every single day but I will be driving a lot. They put on protective tint on the windows so no paparazzi flashes can come through."
The 27-year-old socialite is planning to decorate the interior of the car in her favourite colour to match its exterior.
Paris also told of her plans for the Christmas period, adding to website E! online: "I love going skiing so were going to be going to Aspen and then afterwards my sister and I are going to take some friends and go to Sydney in A
ustralia, to host a huge party for New Year."

Johnny Depp's engagement shop
Johnny Depp has reportedly bought an engagement ring for partner Vanessa Paradis.
The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star asked a high-end California jewellery store to close to the public so he could privately choose a ring for Vanessa, who he has been dating for 10 years.
A source told America's OK! magazine: "This was Johnny's third or fourth visit to the store.
"He looked at an assortment of classic solitaire diamond rings in platinum settings - a really beautiful selection of elegant and understated rings and made a very large purchase."
Johnny - who has two children, Lily Rose, nine and Jack, six, with Vanessa - has previously insisted he and the French star have no desire to marry.
The 45-year-old actor once claimed: "I don't feel like I need a piece of paper that says I own her and she owns me."
Vanessa, 35, recently said she already feels married and has no need to take her relationship further.
She said: "I love the romance of 'Let's get married' but then when you have it so perfect… I mean, I'm more married than anybody can be - we have two kids. Maybe one day, but it's something I can really do without."

Paul McCartney, Britney Spears top "Idol" wish list
British musician Paul McCartney performs during his concert in Tel Aviv in this file photo from September 25, 2008.[Agencies]
LOS ANGELES- Former Beatle Paul McCartney and pop star Britney Spears are at the top of Simon Cowell's celebrity wish list as possible mentors on the upcoming season of "American Idol."
But the chances of getting McCartney to appear on the most-watched American television show seem slim.
"We try every year to get Paul McCartney on but for whatever reason he won't come on," the British judge told reporters on a conference call on Wednesday.
Cowell said he would welcome the chance to see Spears on the show, which returns for its 8th season on January 13. The singer is on a comeback roll with a No.1 album and upcoming tour after almost two years of personal woes.
"She would be first on the list. I would love to see her mentor the contestants. But if she doesn't want to do that and she wants to come on the show to perform, I would welcome her any time," Cowell said.
He said he would also like to see Beyonce and would welcome back singer-songwriter Lionel Richie and movie director Quentin Tarantino, who was a guest judge in 2004.
"American Idol" has produced some bonafide stars since its 2002 debut, including Grammy award winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
Former contestants Jennifer Hudson and Jordin Sparks were both nominated earlier this month for Grammys.
"I absolutely love it when that happens," Cowell said. "There is so much snobbery in the music business about what we do on this show. So I think it is fantastic."

Kate Hudson's single fun
Kate Hudson has vowed to "stay single as long as possible".
The 'Bride Wars' star - who was previously married to Black Crowes rocker Chris Robinson and dated Owen Wilson - is planning to play the field for the first time in her life.
Kate, 29, told America's InStyle magazine: "I'm actually enjoying being single right now because I really never have been.
"I feel good in relationships, I enjoy them. I feel my best when I'm in something solid. But it's also the first time I've ever taken a step back and gotten a new perspective.
"So, I've made a conscious decision to try to stay single as long as possible."
Kate isn't sure if she will marry again after her divorce from Chris - with who she has a four-year-old son, Ryder.
She said: "I don't regret a second of my marriage. Thank God for Chris. He made me partly who I am. We had a great time - we love each other deeply. But I don't know if I will ever get married again. I don't know. It depends on who you end up with."
Kate - who has also dated cyclist Lance Armstrong - has rearranged her work schedule in 2009 to spend more time with Ryder.
She revealed: "When Ryder climbs into bed with me, wraps his arms around me and says, 'Mommy, the sun's up. It's a beautiful morning.' I'm sorry, do I really want to go to work then? No!"

Man arrested for grabbing Lindsay Lohan
PHOENIX - A fan of Lindsay Lohan was arrested early on Wednesday after pushing past a nightclub security guard and trying to grab the actress, police said.
Phoenix resident Daniel Patrick Combs, 38, lunged at Lohan and her friend, British DJ Samantha Ronson, outside Jackrabbit Lounge in Scottsdale, Arizona, police said in a statement.
Combs was detained for a time and later released after being booked on a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge.
Lohan, 22, and Ronson, 30, told officers that they did not know Combs.
The actress shot to fame in Disney's 1998 remake of "The Parent Trap," in which she played the part of identical twins. But she has not starred in a feature film since last year's box office flop "I Know Who Killed Me."

Leona Lewis has been named Person of the Year by PETA. The animal rights organisation - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - has recognised the vegetarian singer's commitment to animal welfare after she reportedly refused to open department store Harrods' winter sale because the shop sells fur.
PETA's Europe Director Robbie LeBlanc said: "Leona Lewis is admired for her beautiful voice, but it's her kindness to animals that makes her a superstar in our book."
Earlier this year, the campaign group crowned the 'Run' singer - who is working on an accessories line of vegan shoes and bags - Sexiest Vegetarian. Lat year's Person of the Year was Sir Paul McCartney's fashion designer daughter Stella McCartney.
Leona, who hasn't eaten meat since she was 12, has previously said: "I am totally against animal cruelty. I am vegetarian so I don't have clothes, shoes, or bags made from leather or suede or any animal products. I'm on a mission."

Monroe photo, Newton photo set records in New York
Sold! Marilyn's iconic images Iconic images of actress Marilyn Monroe fetchd hundreds of thousands of dollars at a New York auction. [Agencies]
NEW YORK – A photograph of Marilyn Monroe by Bert Stern and a photograph by Helmut Newton of four women naked and then dressed sold for record prices on Wednesday, Christie's auction house said.
The Newton photo "Sie Kommen, (Naked and Dressed), Paris, 1981" sold for $662,500, smashing the previous 2007 record for the photographer of $380,725, while the Stern image "The Last Sitting," one of the last pictures of Monroe before her death, sold for $146,500, shattering the $63,000 mark set in 1994.
Both photos were part of the Constantiner Collection, which included the largest-ever grouping of Monroe photos to come to market, more than 100 in all. The entire Constantiner Collection fetched $7.7 million, the highest total for a single owner dedicated photographs sale, Christie's said.
"The superb results achieved for this collection demonstrate the potential of works bought with true passion and considerable connoisseurship to perform magnificently even in the present uncertain economic climate," said Philippe Garner, Christie's international head of photographs, in a statement.
"The results also confirm the central position that Helmut Newton has rightly been accorded as a master photographer of the 20th century, and, of course, Marilyn Monroe's magical appeal has proven to be truly timeless," he said.
Leon and Michaela Constantiner began buying photos of glamour and style icons in the early 1990s. Their collection also includes works William Klein, Herb Ritts, Irving Penn, and scores of prints by Newton, including several life-size nudes estimated at up to $600,000.
Many of the images are already well-known. They appeared in mass market media and helped define the post-war period, Garner said. That contrasts with much contemporary photography, which is made for galleries and museums, rather than destined for magazines.
Since the turn of the millennium, digital photography has taken over from a chemical-based process, so prints available in the art market now are a part of history.

Jim Carrey says "Yes" to comedy again
LOS ANGELES- Comedian Jim Carrey is back to doing whatever it takes to get a laugh, and in his new movie "Yes Man" that means bungee jumping while chatting on a cell phone, and mounting a motorbike in a hospital gown.
He seems a world away from last year, when instead of a comedy the actor starred in dark thriller "The Number 23," a numerology-inspired film most critics said did not add up.
In his new film, which opens on Friday, Carrey is back to his brand of broad comedy that made audiences roar in films such as "Liar Liar" and "Bruce Almighty," which raked in more than $180 million and $240 million, respectively, at U.S. and Canadian box offices. "Number 23" did about $35 million.
"It really comes down to thinking about someone sitting in a seat laughing," Carrey told reporters in recent interviews to promote the movie. "And that's it, when you do a movie like this. It's really that that gets me off."
For "Yes Man," Carrey bungee jumped off a bridge in a scene that filmmakers saved until the end, in case anything happened to the star. He told them he would say "yes" to bungee jumping only once, "so you might as well get it on camera."
Carrey's decision fits with the theme of "Yes Man," in which he plays a loan officer who turns his life upside down by adopting a new philosophy and saying "yes" to everything, from learning Korean to piloting a plane.
His new-found spontaneity helps him win the love of a quirky and impulsive woman named Allison, played by Zooey Deschanel. But he finds out never saying "no" creates plenty of problems.
NOTHING MAGICALSimilarly in 1997's "Liar Liar," Carrey played an attorney who is magically prevented from lying for 24 hours when his son's birthday wish for him to tell the truth comes true.
But the filmmakers behind "Yes Man" said they wanted the movie to revolve around a life-altering decision rather than magic.
Carrey, 46, said that, like his character, he goes through periods of social seclusion and denying himself fun in life.
"Sometimes saying no is saying yes to your own self worth. Know what I'm saying?," Carrey said, in a bit of wordplay.
The Canadian-born comic was taken under the wing of the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield early in his career, later emerging as a star in the early 1990s on the edgy and multi-racial U.S. television show "In Living Color."
Since then he has become a major box office draw for movie comedies, but he has also taken chances in dramas such as the 2004 "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."
Still, for the most part his fans have failed to turn out for Carrey's dramatic turns in the huge numbers that flock to his comedies. "Eternal Sunshine" earned wide critical acclaim but only $34 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices.
But in talking about his new film, one can understand some of the reasons why the actor says "yes" to drama.
In shooting "Yes Man," Carrey said he fractured three ribs shooting one of his many pratfalls. It's a tough job, comedy.

Nicole Kidman's didgeridoo trouble
Nicole Kidman could be left unable to have more children after playing a didgeridoo. The actress appeared on German TV blowing into the traditional Australian instrument while promoting her latest film 'Australia', but Aborigine folklore warns that women who play the didgeridoo could become infertile.
Aborigine language teacher Richard Green warned: "People are going to see Nicole playing it and think it's all right. But it will mean she has no more children. It is not meant to be played by women as it will make them barren."
Alan Madden - a cultural officer with Sydney's Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council - thinks Australian star Nicole and the film's director Baz Luhrman should have known better - particularly after filming the epic movie on location in the outback of Australia, and using Aboriginal actors in the film. He said: "I presume she doesn't know of the taboo, otherwise she wouldn't be playing it.
Nicole, 41 - who adopted two children when married to Tom Cruise, and gave birth to daughter Sunday Rose in July, her first child with second husband Keith Urban - has recently said she may stop acting to have more children.
She said: "I have to say I'm not that interested in making films anymore. I know I'm not meant to say that, but that's where it is for me now. "In terms of my future as an actor and stuff, I don't know. I'm in a place in my life where I've had some great opportunities.
And I may just choose to have some more children." 'Australia' is released in cinemas across Europe during December.

Feng Xiaogang plans earthquake movie

(CRI) Chinese filmmaker Feng Xiaogang has laid aside his planned comedy "The nobles" and is planning a film about the deadly Tangshan earthquake in 1976.
The director, who is now on a cross-country tour to promote his latest project, the romance comedy "If You Are the One", confirmed the news at its Beijing premiere on Tuesday, The Beijing Times reported.
Feng Xiaogang said the film, which will be presented by Huayi Bros Pictures, is not motivated by the tragic 7.8-magnitude quake which jolted southwest China on May 12, 2008.
"I decided on the subject before the May 12th earthquake happened. I have received requests from the Tangshan municipality, and one the other hand, I've also found a suitable novel for adaptation," Feng said, "I hope to make it a deeply-felt film."
According to an early report by the 'Oriental Morning Post', Huayi Bros President, Wang Zhonglei, revealed during the Tokyo International Film Festival the film will be based on Canadian Chinese author Zhang Ling's novelette, "Aftershocks", which tells the story of the effect of the Tangshan earthquake on the life of a 7-year-old girl.
Filming will start in 2009 and the movie, which Wang Zhonglei calls "a stunning film about national spirit," is expected to be screened in 2010.
The earthquake occurred on July 28th, 1976. It flattened the city of Tangshan in northern Hebei province, killing at least 240,000 people and severely injuring a further 164,000. It is believed to be the deadliest earthquake of the 20th century.

Coldplay's sensible tour
Coldplay do not "deflower virgins" while on tour. The clean-living band insist their backstage antics are limited to changing their clothes and they never take advantage of groupies like a lot of rockers.
Guitarist Johnny Buckland said: "There's sort of a whole heap of things that we do before the show. "Obviously we get changed, we do a bit of singing, play the guitar and just sort of relax for a bit before. But we don't deflower any virgins or anything like that."
Meanwhile, frontman Chris Martin has admitted their live shows are influenced by flamboyant performers the Flaming Lips.
He added to Rolling Stone magazine: "Any theatrics on our part tend to be inspired by the Flaming Lips.
So confetti probably came from seeing their show and thinking, 'Oh, confetti looks good,' and then thinking, 'Well, how can we make confetti our own?' "And we thought, 'Oh, let's make them all little butterflies.' That actually comes from taking my kids to the butterfly house at the zoo."

Taylor Swift flies high on chart as sales slide
Singer Taylor Swift poses as she arrives at "The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!: Countdown to Music's Biggest Night" in Los Angeles, California December 3, 2008. [Agencies]
NEW YORK - In a week without a top 10 debut, teen country star Taylor Swift reclaimed her crown on the U.S. pop album charts on Wednesday, but overall sales sank in the second-to-last full week before Christmas.
Swift's second release, "Fearless," rose one place to the top after selling 249,000 copies during the week ended December 14, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album debuted at No. 1 five weeks ago with 592,000 and has shifted 1.5 million so far.
Last week's chart-topper, Britney Spears' "Circus," slipped to No. 2 with 200,000, a hefty 60% drop from its opening round. Beyonce's "I Am ... Sasha Fierce" held at No. 3 with 159,000.
Overall album sales were up 14% from the previous week, at 12.93 million units. However, sales slid 28% from the year-ago period, when Josh Groban's "Noel" led the field for a fourth week with 669,000 copies. Year to date, sales are off 14.4% compared to 2007, marking the fourth consecutive down year for the music industry. Compared to the same week in 2006, sales slid 65%.
As was the case this time last year, new entries were largely hip-hop and R&B efforts, and the artists suffered sharp declines. The top debut was Musiq Soulchild's "onmyradio" at No. 11 with 91,000 copies. The soul/R&B singer has two prior No. 1s, most recently "Luvanmusiq," which opened to 149,000 copies in March 2007.
Entering at No. 12 was Common's "Universal Mind Control" with 82,000. His previous album "Finding Forever," also a 2007 chart-topper, debuted with 155,000 copies.
Brandy's Epic Records debut "Human" bowed at No. 15 with 73,000; her Atlantic Records swan song, "Afrodisiac," hit No. 3 with 131,000 copies in 2004. Avant's fifth, self-titled album debuted at No. 26 with 52,000. His previous release, "Director," reached No. 4 in 2006 with 123,000 copies.
Back to the top tier, Canadian rock band Nickelback's "Dark Horse" rose one to No. 4 with 156,000. The soundtrack to the hit vampire romance "Twilight" was also up one, to No. 5, with 132,000.
Kanye West's "808s & Heartbreak" fell two places to No. 6 with 127,000. The multi-artist hits compilation "Now 29" jumped two places to No. 7 with 114,000 units. AC/DC's former chart-topper "Black Ice" rose three places to No. 8 with 110,000. The soundtrack to Disney's "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" slipped one to No. 9 with 107,000. "American Idol" champ David Cook's self-titled major-label debut held at No. 10 with 104,000.

Madonna's divorce sums
Guy Ritchie could get 21 million less in his divorce settlement from Madonna. The singer has released two conflicting statements regarding the payout, sparking confusion over how much the 'RocknRolla' director will receive in total.
The first statement from Madonna's spokesperson Liz Rosenberg, released on Monday (15.12.08), stated Guy would receive between 50 and 60 million in cash and property. But in a following email to the BBC, Madonna's team claimed Guy would get $60-70 million - which converts to between 39 and 46 million.
A source close to Guy told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "Madonna seems to be trying to paint Guy as the bad cop, but it's not working. "If her people can't even decide on a single figure, then he's hardly a money-grabbing chancer. He's determined to keep a dignified silence, but she is making it difficult."
Currently, it is believed Guy will receive the couple's Ashcombe House estate in Wiltshire, Southern England, their London pub The Punch Bowl and a significant cash sum in their divorce settlement.
The two properties are collectively worth around 12.5 million. Guy, 40, and Madonna, 50, were awarded a decree nisi in their divorce in a London court on November 21. They are still finalising custody arrangements for the three children they raise.

Lily Allen's wife retirement

Lily Allen will retire when she gets married. The 'Smile' singer will walk away from the music business as soon as she finds the man of her dreams because she doesn't want to be a pop star forever.
When asked if she could imagine performing her songs in 40 years time, she said: "No. Absolutely my idea of hell. My worst nightmare! I want to have children and live in the countryside. Sorry - boring I know. "I'm retiring when someone marries me and I have children."
However, the 23-year-old star doesn't believe she will walk down the aisle any time in the near future.
Lily - who split from Chemical Brothers star Ed Simons this year shortly after she suffered a miscarriage - added: "I'll have to wait until I fall in love again. That's my plan anyway. I don't know how long it will take. "I just have to find the right person but I'm going to be very busy over the next couple of years."

Fall Out Boy turn focus outward on new CD
CHICAGO – If you're wondering how Pete Wentz feels about becoming a dad or looking for insight into his recent marriage to Ashlee Simpson, don't expect to find any details by listening to Fall Out Boy's new CD, "Folie A Deux."
Even though the bassist is the chief lyricist and the band's tabloid-centric spokesman, for "Folie A Deux," Wentz shifted the focus away from himself and turned it outward onto the world.
Lead singer Patrick Stump calls "Folie A Deux" the band's "statement record."
"(It's) dissecting how self-motivated our culture is," Stump said in a recent interview. "Pete on this record wrote from a very different perspective than he did on previous records."
"Folie A Deux," French for "shared madness of two," was released on Tuesday. It's the third major-label CD for the emo-rockers, who became a multiplatinum success story with the release of their 2005 album, "From Under the Cork Tree," which included the top single "Sugar, We're Goin Down."
While Stump's melodious falsetto anchors the band's sound, it's Wentz who provides the band's emotional content (the group's other members are guitarist Joe Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley). In the past, Wentz has worn his heart on the Fall Out Boy's lyrical sleeve, with songs about relationship dramas and painful splits.
Over the past two years, Wentz has become a sought-after star thanks to his high-profile union with Simpson, their new baby (Bronx Mowgli), his turn as TV host on MTV's "FNMTV" and his endless blog postings (Stump has had successful collaborations with the likes of bands like Gym Class Heroes — on Wentz's record label — but has preferred to stay out of the limelight).
But as Wentz's reaches a new high in name recognition, musically, he decided to stop writing as much from a personal standpoint.
"This record is not the standard autobiographical thing like when we first started," says Stump, sitting with his bandmates as they prepared to tape a concert special for Fuse TV. "Autobiography loses its luster when everyone is doing it."
"Sometimes I've gone into a big dark cave and that's no fun," adds Wentz, looking a bit fatigued.
"Folie A Deux" is the group's second album in two years. While the band has become used to topping the charts, they insist their main goal is simply creating good music.
But at the same time, they don't want to overthink it.
"A lot of bands sit on their hands and think, 'We need to make the perfect record,'" Wentz says. "(They should be) taking a snapshot of the moment you're (in) at the time."
"The Jonas Brothers can't have all the shine," he jokes.
The band purposely cut short the amount of time set aside for recording the album. Stump said that was going back to the days when they were a young, broke band who had to finish an album before the money ran out.
"There was something really interesting about that creative process when we were starting out," says Stump. "The more time you have, the more potential you have for excess."

Britney Spears' Madonna show
They famously locked lips at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, and Britney also performed 'Human Nature' with Madonna as part of her 'Sticky and Sweet' world tour last month. It was recently reported Britney's tour, to support her new LP 'Circus', is inspired by her breakdown, and will see the mother-of-two flee to the circus before emerging from the end of a rainbow following a thunderstorm.
A source said: "Britney is well aware of what a roller coaster she has been on. She thought the best metaphor to use would be the circus. Fans get to travel with her through her fall from grace and her eventual rehabilitation."
Britney, 27, famously went off the rails following the end of her marriage to Kevin Federline. She shaved her head in February 2007 and was hospitalised several times - most famously in January of this year when she refused to return sons Sean Preston, three, and Jayden James, two, to their father.
Since then, Britney's dad Jamie has taken on co-conservatorship of her affairs and she has begun to turn her life and career around. Wade Robson - who is choreographing the 27-year-old singer's comeback shows - has revealed Britney is keen for her 50-year-old idol to join her on stage at one of her concerts.
He said: "I'm choreographing and set-designing Britney's tour. There has been talk of Madonna making an appearance, and there's so many place we could take that. At this point, the main issue is timing." This would not be the first time Britney and Madonna have appeared on stage together.

"Earth" spins Keanu Reeves to No. 1 at box office
Actors Keanu Reeves (R) and Jennifer Connelly pose during a photo call for director Scott Derrickson's film, "The Day the Earth Stood Still" in Paris November 21, 2008. [Agencies]
LOS ANGELES - Keanu Reeves, an actor known for his offbeat movie choices, added another unlikely box office hit to his collection on Sunday with "The Day the Earth Stood Still," a chart-topping remake of a 1951 sci-fi movie.
The film, largely ridiculed by critics, sold an estimated $31 million worth of tickets in the United States and Canada since opening on Friday, distributor 20th Century Fox said.
It was also the top pick internationally, raking in $39 million from 90 markets. Fox, a unit of News Corp, said the film was No. 1 in 53 of those markets, with Russia ($5.6 million) and Britain ($4.1 million) leading the way.
The film cost about $80 million to make, said Fox.
The North American tally was in line with expectations. It marks Reeves' biggest opening since 2003's "The Matrix Revolutions," the third film in the blockbuster "Matrix" franchise, kicked off with $48 million on its way to $139 million. Since then, he has starred in a series of art-house pictures (2005's "Thumbsucker") and middling studio pictures (2006's "The Lake House").
Reeves, 44, plays the alien Klaatu, who comes to save Earth from itself. The film co-stars Jennifer Connelly. Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") directed.
"It's an environmental as well as a political statement," said Chris Aronson, Fox's senior vice president of domestic distribution.
Critics were less impressed. The Wall Street Journal said the movie was "insufferably full of itself," while the Houston Chronicle described it as "a stunningly misconceived folly." On the other hand, the Los Angeles Times said the film was "enjoyable."
After two weeks at No. 1 in North America, the holiday comedy "Four Christmases" slipped to No. 2 with $13.3 million, taking its total to $88 million. The film, starring Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon, was released by Warner Bros. Pictures, a unit of Time Warner Inc.

Cruise admits being 'arrogant' in interview
Tom Cruise called his behaviour "arrogant" and said he had learned a lesson from a 2005 television interview in which he dismissed psychiatry as pseudoscience.
The actor has been ridiculed for over-the-top behaviour in TV interviews and generated tabloid headlines over his love life and vocal support for the Church of Scientology, which is critical of the prescription of mind- and mood-altering drugs.
He was contrite in an interview with Today host Matt Lauer on Monday, his first appearance on the show since the 2005 incident.
"After looking at it I really thought it's not what I intended. I thought in looking at myself that I came across as arrogant," Cruise said.
"I absolutely could have handled that better," he said.
In the 2005 interview, Lauer brought up Cruise's public dismissal of psychiatry and asked Cruise whether it was possible that psychiatry had helped people.
"I've never agreed with psychiatry, ever. Before I was a Scientologist I never agreed with psychiatry," Cruise said back then.
He also scolded Lauer, saying, "You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do."
Cruise recently admitted to People magazine he could have "handled things better" in his TV appearances and joked about his antics on Oprah Winfrey's talk show, when he leapt onto a couch in front of millions of viewers and proclaimed his love for actress Katie Holmes, now his wife.

Madonna settles divorce for up to $92 million
REUTERS/Eric Gaillard/Files
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Madonna has paid her ex-husband British director Guy Ritchie up to 60 million pounds ($92 million) to settle their divorce after eight years of marriage, her spokeswoman said on Monday.
Liz Rosenberg said the singer, 50, had given Ritchie, 40, between 50 and 60 million pounds ($76 million and $92 million) as part of their divorce, which was granted by a British court on November 21.
She said that sum includes the couple's English country estate, Ashcombe, which is valued at about 20 million pounds ($30 million).
The couple's combined wealth has been estimated at about $525 million, but Madonna accounts for most of it.
Rosenberg said custody arrangements for the couple's children have not been finalized.
Madonna and Ritchie have an 8-year-old son, Rocco, and 3-year-old son David, adopted from Malawi. The singer also has a daughter Lourdes, born in 1996, from her relationship with fitness trainer Carlos Leon.
Madonna, one of the most successful singers of all time with estimated album sales of more than 200 million, was married once before, to actor Sean Penn, in the 1980s.
Madonna and Ritchie announced their split in October, nearly eight years after their fairytale wedding at Skibo Castle in Scotland.
Ritchie is a British film director who is making Hollywood blockbuster "Sherlock Holmes" starring Robert Downey Jr. as the Victorian-era super sleuth.

Synopsis :
Once upon a time, in the faraway kingdom of Dor, there was magic in the air, laughter aplenty and gallons of mouthwatering soup. But an accident left the King broken-hearted, the Princess filled with longing and the townsfolk without their soup. Sunlight disappeared. The world became gray. All hope was lost in this land...until Despereaux Tilling was born.
A modern fairy tale from visionary filmmaker Gary Ross, together with directors Sam Fell & Rob Stevenhagen, The Tale of Despereaux tells the story of several unlikely heroes: Despereaux (Matthew Broderick), a brave mouse banished to the dungeon for speaking with a human; Roscuro (Dustin Hoffman), a good-hearted rat who loves light and soup, but is exiled to darkness; Pea (Emma Watson), a Princess in a gloomy castle who is prisoner to her father's grief; and Mig (Tracey Ullman), a servant girl who longs to be a Princess, but is forced to serve the jailer (Robbie Coltrane).
Tiny and graced with oversized ears, Despereaux was born too big for his little world. Refusing to live his life cowering, he befriends a Princess named Pea and learns to read (rather than eat) books -- reveling in stories of knights, dragons and fair maidens. Banished from Mouseworld for being more man than mouse, Despereaux is rescued by another outcast, Roscuro, who also wants to hear the tales. But when the Princess dismisses Roscuro's friendship, he becomes the ultimate rat and plots revenge with fellow outsider Mig.
After Pea is kidnapped, Despereaux discovers he is the only one who can rescue her... and that even the tiniest mouse can find the courage of a knight in shining armor. In this tale of bravery, forgiveness and redemption, one small creature will teach a kingdom that it takes only a little light to show the truth: what you look like doesn't equal what you are.
