Cate Blanchett's Robin Hood role

2008 Actress Cate Blanchett, dressed in Dries van Noten and wearing jewellery by Lorraine Schwartz, presents the Oscar for best art direction during the 80th annual Academy Awards, the Oscars, in Hollywood February 24, 2008. [Agencies]

Cate Blanchett will star as Maid Marian in 'Robin Hood'.

The 'Curious Case of Benjamin Button' actress will appear opposite Russell Crowe in Ridley Scott's big-budget adaptation of the classic folk tale, it has been confirmed.

'Factory Girl' star Sienna Miller was originally meant to play the female lead but was axed late last year amid rumours she would make the 'Gladiator' star seem old and out-of-shape.

Co-producer Brian Grazer insists Cate will be a strong match for Russell.

He said recently: "They are both highly accomplished dramatic actors who are taken seriously playing rich characters in period pieces, but each has the ability to show you fun."

The adventure film had originally been titled 'Nottingham' and Russell was set to play both outlaw Robin and his nemesis, the Sheriff of Nottingham, but the director recently revealed they have overhauled the script completely.

He said: "Russell in both roles was an idea so far back, way back when at the time I had this proposed to me, and I read it and thought, 'I don't really know what it does for it, but it's alright.'

"It is better to simply have the evolution of a character called Robin Hood, who will come out of a point in the Crusades which is the end.

"The Sheriff of Nottingham is always a kind of an amusing character in most of the movies, who represents the hierarchy in the story at that point."

The movie is now likely to focus on the origins of Robin Hood and how he falls in love with the beautiful Maid Marian.

Valkyrie screens in China but Cruise unworried by controversy

Wartime thriller 'Valkyrie' starring Tom Cruise hit screens across China on Thursday, after raking in more than one hundred million dollars in North America since its New York premiere on December 13, 2008.

The World War II film, directed by 'X-Men' director Bryan Singer, is based on the true story of the 1944 plot, lead by Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, to assassinate Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and topple the Third Reich regime.

The film's China premiere was held on Wednesday in Beijing without the attendance of Tom Cruise, who was also absent from the Oscars earlier this week, due to his busy schedule.

It's been three years since the last Tom Cruise blockbuster, 'Mission Impossible 3', premiered in China in 2006.

In an e-mail interview with Beijing News, a local newspaper, the Hollywood mogul said he's always been fascinated with the World War II period, and he couldn't get enough of it when first reading the screenplay of 'Valkyrie'.

The scenes of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg joining the German Resistance group, a secret anti-Nazi organization, were filmed in a house Stauffenberg once dropped by, and the owner of the house, whose father was executed by the Nazis after the Hitler assassination failed, showed the 'Valkyrie' crew pictures of her time, Cruise revealed.

The Hollywood actor said he wasn't troubled by the prospect of playing a controversial character. He was aware the moment he took on the Stauffenberg role, that the controversy of 'good Germans during World War II' would follow with the film.

The filming of 'Valkyrie' was not without controversy. It was reported the German government would not allow film shooting in certain locations because of Cruise's American background and his reputation as a staunch scientologist.

Dev Patel quizzed for charity

Actors Freida Pinto and Dev Patel from best picture nominee "Slumdog Millionaire" pose on arrival at the 81st Academy Awards in Hollywood, California February 22, 2009. [Agencies]

Dev Patel and Danny Boyle are going on 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?' to raise money for Indian street kids.

The 'Slumdog Millionaire' star and the film's Oscar-winning director hope to bag the £1 million jackpot for the Railway Children charity when they team up for a UK celebrity special.

A source said: "Danny and Dev are keen to keep on giving back to the street kids depicted in the movie.

"It should happen this year. To have Dev back in the Millionaire hot seat would be brilliant, and would do a lot for the charity."

The film - which picked up eight Academy Awards at the Oscars - follows orphan Jamal, who is born into the slums of Mumbai.

After fleeing his violent and poverty stricken home, Jamal - played by 18-year-old Dev - enters India's version of the game show and scoops the top prize against all odds.

A spokesperson for the ITV show said: "We were approached by Railway Children about the special - and we think it would be fantastic.

"Danny and Dev would play together, as with all our celebrity specials, but filming depends on their availability."

Rihanna photographed in Mexico

Singer Rihanna arrives at the 2008 American Music Awards in Los Angeles November 23, 2008. [Agencies]

Beaten-up beauty Rihanna donned a bikini and soaked up some Mexican sun at a private villa on Saturday, a day after her 21st birthday.

Photos of her south-of-the-border sojourn ran in today's print edition of the New York Daily News and quickly turned up online. The shocking bruises that sources say boyfriend Chris Brown left on the songbird's face just before the Grammy Awards were not visible in exclusive photographs obtained by the Daily News.

Nor was she smiling.

Her grim expression, so at odds with the balmy setting, hinted at the heartbreak the "Umbrella" singer has endured since her private agony became public knowledge.

Rihanna's family was furious after a photograph of her battered face was leaked, and the singer was determined to get out of Los Angeles.

On February 25, the L.A. district attorney's office said the investigation was still open and no decision on charges has been made.

Shortly before she split last Thursday, Rihanna released a note to her fans telling them "she remains strong."

Then, with a couple of close friends, Rihanna decamped for a private beachside villa in Punta Mita.

Brown, a 19-year-old R&B singer, was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats against Rihanna after the Feb. 8 attack. He has since enrolled in anger management classes.

Music to the ears of hospital patients

Actor and musician Kevin Bacon performs with the "Bacon Brothers" during a tribute to Bruce Springsteen's music career at Carnegie Hall in New York April 5, 2007.[Agencies]

NEW YORK- Patients in hospitals and healthcare facilities are often too sick to attend musical concerts, so a charity is bringing the music to them.

Musicians on Call, a non-profit organization, has organized bedside performances of live or recorded music for 125,000 patients since it was formed in 1999.

"People in hospitals are really hurting, emotionally and in a lot of other ways, and if we can do something then it's a great thing to do and it means a lot," said composer and musician Michael Bacon.

Bacon, along with his actor/musician brother Kevin, hosted a packed concert at New York's Hard Rock Cafe on Tuesday to raise money for the charity.

Musicians on Call provides room-to-room hospital performances by both local musicians and national celebrities, who have included John Mayer, Gavin DeGraw, Avril Lavigne and Kelly Rowland.

"It's a simple idea but results in a lot of positive force in recovery," said singer James Taylor. who performed at the concert.

Grammy-award winner Taylor, who has battled depression and drug dependency, understands the importance music holds in any recovery process.

"I'm sure that it saved my life. I know that it makes a direct spiritual connection, that it's a short cut to your soul and heart," he said at the concert.

"It just puts you in a better place and reminds you of the kindness of the world and the beneficence of existence," Taylor, who will begin a tour of the US and Europe this summer, added.

The concert is one of a series Michael and Kevin and their band The Bacon Brothers, who will release their new album "New Year's Day next month, will be performing at Hard Rock Cafes across the United States to raise money for the group.

Kevin Bacon says that while acting and songwriting have their unique challenges, his approach to both is the same.

"It's different skills but there's still a way of trying to reach inside and express something. When it's good it's not by rote, and music and acting are real similar that way," he said.

The actor showed a sense of humor about his ubiquitous presence in films over nearly three decades, which spawned the trivia game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon."

When asked whether there may be fans of his music who have never seen his films, Bacon replied with a laugh, "Who possibly could never have seen a movie that I'm in. What rock would they be living under."

Taylor Swift, "Slumdog" soundtrack shine on chart

U.S. singer Taylor Swift poses on the red carpet at the 'Echo Music Awards' ceremony in Berlin, February 21, 2009. The German Phonographic Academy honours artists from all over the world in 24 categories. [Agencies]

NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES – Country star Taylor Swift claimed a 10th non-consecutive week at No. 1 on the U.S. pop album chart on Wednesday, while the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning movie "Slumdog Millionaire" rocketed up the rankings.

Swift's "Fearless" moved 62,000 copies during the week ended February 22, the fourth-lowest tally for a chart-topper in the 18 years since Nielsen SoundScan started supplying sales data for the Billboard 200. "Fearless," the third-best-selling release of 2008, has sold 2.7 million copies in total.

Its 10-week at the top is unmatched by any album since Santana's "Supernatural" racked up 12 weeks at No. 1 in 1999 and 2000. Only eight other albums by solo female artists have earned 10 weeks or more at No. 1. The last to do so was "Jagged Little Pill" by Alanis Morissette, which strung together 12 weeks at No. 1 in 1995 and 1996.

The eight Academy Awards netted on Sunday by "Slumdog Millionaire," including best picture and song, helped the movie's soundtrack vault 26 places to No. 22. It's likely that most of the gain came from digital purchases made during ABC's broadcast of the Oscars or immediately after the show concluded. Look for further gains when the chart for this week is published next Wednesday.

R&B singer Charlie Wilson debuted at No. 2 with "Uncle Charlie," which sold 58,000 copies. His last set, 2005's "Charlie, Last Name Wilson," debuted and peaked at No. 10 with an opening week of 71,000.

Also new was Morrissey's "Years of Refusal" at No. 11, with 31,000 copies. In a sign of the grim times in the music business, his previous release, 2006's "Ringleader of the Tormentors," started with 34,000 copies, which was good enough for only No. 27. In 2004, "You Are the Quarry" debuted at No. 11 with 56,000 copies.

Denver rock act the Fray's recent self-titled chart-topper slipped one place to No. 3 with 53,000.

Nickelback's "Dark Horse" rebounded seven places to No. 4 with 43,000. Beyonce's "I Am... Sasha Fierce" was also up seven, to No. 5, with 41,000. Jamie Foxx's "Intuition" jumped eight to No. 6 with 33,000, and India.Arie's "Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics" slid four places to No. 7 with 32,000.

Kanye West's "808s & Heartbreak" jumped six places to No. 8 with 32,000 copies. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' Grammy-winning collaboration "Raising Sand" fell seven to No. 9, also with 32,000. Lady GaGa's "The Fame" rose two places to a new peak of No. 10, also with 32,000.

Other debuts included singer/songwriter M. Ward's "Hold Time" at No. 31, and Annie Lennox's CD/DVD set "Annie Lennox Collection" at No. 34.

At 7.41 million units, sales were down 13.3% from the previous week and down by 7% compared to the same week in 2008. Year-to-date sales are off 12% at 57 million.

Zac Efron proposes to Vanessa?

Actor Zac Efron and actress Vanessa Hudgens pose for photographers on the red carpet at the 81st Academy Awards in Hollywood, California February 22, 2009. [Agencies]

Zac Efron has proposed to Vanessa Hudgens to please her mother.

The 'High School Musical' actor reportedly popped the question to his girlfriend of three years because her mom Gina Hudgens doesn't approve of the couple living together out of wedlock.

A source said: "Zac is relieved to be out of the pressure cooker, because Vanessa's mother has been putting serious heat on him to make an honest woman out of her daughter. She is old-school and doesn't approve of Vanessa living with Zac without some type of wedding promise."

Zac, 21, is believed to have asked 20-year-old Vanessa to marry him while they holidayed in Japan in January. The couple spend most of their time living in Vanessa's six-bedroom Tuscan style mansion in Studio City, California - despite Zac spending $2.3million on his own modern, two-bedroom house in the Hollywood Hills last December.

The source added to National Enquirer magazine: "Zac loves the current arrangement. He adores Vanessa and they gel really well together. Gina already considers Zac a part of the family.

So she's happy that he proposed." It has been reported the couple - who met on the set of 'High School Musical' - hope to tie the knot sometime next year.

Rihanna's Chris reunion?

Singer Rihanna arrives at the 2008 American Music Awards in Los Angeles November 23, 2008. [Agencies]

Rihanna is considering taking Chris Brown back.

The 'Umbrella' star is reportedly thinking about rekindling her romance with Chris, who is accused of assaulting her, after he bombarded her with gifts for her 21st birthday.

The 19-year-old singer sent Rihanna a host of presents including an iPod and diamond necklace and bracelet and also phoned her during her low-key party on Friday (20.02.09).

A source told the New York Daily News newspaper: "Chris called Rihanna to wish her a happy birthday. He's absolutely trying to get back into her good graces. He knows he's very much in the doghouse right now, and is doing everything he can to show her how sorry he is."

Despite Rihanna's friends being against the reunion, the Barbados-born beauty is feeling lonely without Chris.

The source added: "Rihanna so wanted Chris with her on her big day, but obviously realises why they can't be together right now. But it's becoming more and more clear that she can't be without him."

Despite her recent troubles, the 'Shut Up and Drive' singer managed to enjoy her casino-themed birthday party, held at a rented Hollywood house, and appears to be recovering from the facial injuries she sustained in the alleged attack.

The source said: "She hasn't scarred or anything. She was in a great mood. She was really celebrating not just her birthday, but life in general.

"Her theme was 'Blackjack 21' and all the guests gambled. And although there was alcohol available, Rihanna wasn't drinking."

Rihanna is now believed to be in Barbados spending time with her family.

Global flavor sweeps the Oscars

Kate Winslet (left), best actress for The Reader, Sean Penn (center), best actor for Milk, and Spanish actress Penelope Cruz, best supporting actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, pose with their Oscars backstage at the 81st Academy Awards in Hollywood on Sunday night.[Agencies]

LOS ANGELES: A ragtag group of Indian orphans triumphed at the Academy Awards on Sunday as Slumdog Millionaire took top honors with an against-all-odds love story that resonated with recession-weary moviegoers.

The small-budget British film - shot in the teeming slums of Mumbai - was named best picture as widely predicted and won seven other Oscars.

At the climax of the night, the stage was swarmed by jubilant members of the Slumdog cast and crew, including several school children who were plucked from Mumbai's shanty towns to appear in the movie.

British filmmaker Danny Boyle was named best director for the often dark but ultimately hopeful tale of a young orphan who risks it all for love and a shot at instant wealth as a TV game show contestant.

"It is a love story but is heavily disguised," he said. "The spine appears to be the game show but ... there's another story underneath, which is the love story."

Adding to the international flavor of this year's Oscars, hosted by Australian stage and film star Hugh Jackman, three of the night's four acting awards went to non-Americans.

Kate Winslet of Britain was named best actress for her dramatic turn as a former Nazi prison guard who has a love affair with a teenage boy in The Reader.

Penelope Cruz broke through as the first Spanish actress to claim an Academy Award, winning for her supporting role in the Woody Allen romance Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

And Australian Heath Ledger, who died last year of an accidental prescription pill overdose, was named best supporting actor for his role as the evil Joker in the Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight.

Sean Penn, the lone American among the newly honored performers, was voted best actor for his portrait of slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk in the political drama Milk.

But Slumdog, shot on a modest budget of $15 million, was the big winner. Besides best picture and best director, the film also earned Oscars for cinematography, sound mixing, film editing, original score and song.

The movie's triumph restored a kind of feel-good mood to the Oscars amid the global economic downturn, following several years in which dark dramas, No Country for Old Men, The Departed and Crash topped the Oscars.

The only arena in which the film was overshadowed was in the acting categories, where A-list stars earned the nominations over the relatively unknown cast of Slumdog.

Winslet, a six-time nominee, fought back tears when accepting her trophy and remembered a time as a child when she dreamed of winning it.

"I would be lying if I said I haven't made a version of this speech before. I think I was probably 8-years-old and staring into the bathroom mirror," she said.

"Project Runway" show features phantom finalists

Project Runway judges (L-R)Designer Michael Kors, model Heidi Klum and Nina Garcia pose for photographers before the Project Runway show during New York Fashion Week, February 20, 2009.[Agencies]

NEW YORK- If fashion shows are staged to publicize designers, what then to make of the "Project Runway" show on Friday that presented the designs of the hit television show finalists under a veil of anonymity?

The unusual anticlimactic ending to the reality series was the unhappy result of a protracted legal battle that has kept the show's current season six from premiering.

Rather than the practice of seasons past, when the show's finalists competed at New York's Fashion Week after viewers watched them on the series for several weeks, no one has seen this season's contest.

"We're all in a little bit of a limbo," said model Heidi Klum, the show's co-creator and host. "No one has seen the show yet ... and I'm a little bit sad for our designers because they won't get the recognition."

The legal battle began when Weinstein Co., the show's producer, took the hugely popular "Project Runway" off cable network Bravo, where it had been for five years.

Weinstein sold the "Project Runway" rights to rival station Lifetime.

Bravo's owner NBC Universal filed a lawsuit, and a court ruling has barred Lifetime from showing the season, all of which was shot in Los Angeles. It is unclear if the shows will run once the legal dispute is resolved.

So on Friday, the "Project Runway" finalists showed their collections without showing their faces.

A crowd of fashion editors, buyers and fans watched as models paraded the first collection of 12 looks, by far the most casual, down the runway.

It featured oversized, cable wrap sweaters and knits atop tight black leather pants. The designer also paired short, tailored jackets with pleated pants and a lame top with a silver crepe skirt.

The next contestant showed elegant dresses in black, plum and gold, with oversized, flapping pleats, a one-shouldered gown, cape jacket and short dresses with tiers of ruffles.

The final collection put an edgy spin on classic styling with an extensive use of heavy wool, felt and black in highly structured designs.

An elegant black coat featured an oversized shawl collar, while short jackets and sweaters sported hoods. Gowns and tops were constructed of cross-woven straps, and oversized pleats were also in evidence.

"We wish we could bring out the three finalists," said Tim Gunn, who serves as mentor to the show's contestants. "We have a smashing, sensational season."

Throughout the season, typically, a contestant is eliminated at the end of each weekly show. The runway finale is taped, edited and shown on television soon afterward.

Despite all the secrecy, one of the show's judges, Nina Garcia of Marie Claire magazine, joked at the conclusion: "Of course, there's a clear winner in my mind."

Revamped Oscar broadcast a pleasant surprise

Host Hugh Jackman performs his opening monologue during the 81st Academy Awards in Hollywood, California February 22, 2009.[Agencies]

LOS ANGELES- It turns out producers Bill Condon and Laurence Mark weren't kidding when they promised to reinvent the broken Academy Awards ceremony.

On Sunday night, the "Dreamgirls" duo pulled off a heartfelt, elegant and stylish affair that played with uncommon flair over ABC.

One can quibble about the effectiveness of the production numbers but not the fact that this wasn't the same old Oscar song and dance.

The newfangled touches put the Oscarcast's focus back where it should be: on the nominees and winners rather than some thematic salute to yesteryear. The gambit of having a group of former winners pay homage to the acting nominees with singularly focused tributes should be made part of every Academy Awards going forward. The incorporation of classic clips into the best picture intro likewise proved impactful for its sheer simplicity.

And wonder of wonders, no one got played off of the stage by the orchestra.

There was a 1940s nightclub feel in the ambience and the shimmering rounded stage and a Broadway musical vibe that played to the strengths of first-time host Hugh Jackman, who seemed almost shockingly comfortable in the role.

Jackman eschewed a traditional monologue for a lighthearted opening production medley paying playful homage to the year's biggest films, which from what apparently played better in the room than on the tube -- where it came off awkward and forced. But Jackman found his sea legs to preside with his typical sprightly charm, faring better around the midway point with a spirited "The Musical Is Back" number beside a vivacious Beyonce.

A viewer also couldn't help but get caught up in the Bollywood-conquers-Hollywood electricity that enveloped the Kodak Theater with "Slumdog Millionaire's" wildly popular eight-victory explosion. It was also perhaps fitting that at a time when the Screen Actors Guild finds its contract talks imperiled, a film that featured no nominated actors from its cast would pull off such a haul.

There were few gaffes in the telecast and substantially less of the usual stilted wisecracking among presenters -- and in fact, far fewer presenters. It was a novel format that had people staying up there longer to dispense more awards, giving the proceedings less a feel of a teleprompter-fueled revolving door. Sean Penn and Kate Winslet gave stirring acceptance speeches as well, though Penn's began a bit painfully with his blurting, "You commie, homo-loving sons of guns" while holding his golden guy aloft. Even the Brits will be pleased this time, as Winslet was able to avoid crying (unlike at the Golden Globes) and kept the blubbering to a minimum.

Indeed, it was the kind of night when the winners were treated like winners rather than motorists whose parking meters are about to expire. And for a change, the audience didn't feel cheated.

The 'Valkyrie' star was "visibly flustered" when Penelope - who he dated for three years before they split in 2004 - approached him at a pre-Oscars party in Beverly Hills on Friday night (20.02.09).

A source said: "Penelope tapped him on the shoulder and timidly asked, 'Tom?'

"Tom turned around, got visibly flustered and awkwardly said, 'Oh, hey. Hi', and gave her a small, distant hug before turning back around to his friends. It was weird."

The 46-year-old actor is now married to actress Katie Holmes, who was absent from the party, hosted by the head of Creative Artists Agency Bryan Lourd.

The source told the New York Post newspaper: "Katie was not there. But he clearly hasn't run into Penelope very often since they split."

Madonna, Sir Elton John, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Ford, Mike Myers, Shirley MacLaine, Meg Ryan, Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio were also at the party.

Best & Worst of the Oscars: Hugh Jackmania!

Oh, man, did you see that moment when that guy did that thing? Don't worry, we did. Read on and get the full story of Oscar's best, worst and otherest.

Best Performance: Even with the slightly forced "recession Oscars" conceit, host Hugh Jackman delivered a completely winning song and dance to open the show that totally made us forget they didn't hire a comedian. Showing off both talent and a sly sense of humor, Jackman nailed it.

Best Lyric From the Opening Song: "I would swim a sea of human excrement." -- Jackman crooning sweet(?)ly to Kate Winslet

Worst Transition: From the goofily good opener—the techno Reader representation was more entertaining than the movie—the show bogged down with that somber bunch of Best Supporting Actresses intoning like they were going to banish the winner to the Forbidden Zone with General Zod.

Best Brangelina Quip: Jackman drew our attention to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie before saying, "I don't actually have a joke for them, I'm just contractually required to mention them five times during the show." (Not bad; it's 25 times for us.)

Best Present: Copresenters Steve Martin and Tina Fey, who've been funny together on TV and film, delivered a hilarious tribute to writers that made us want to see them make another movie together. Or, you know, read something.

Best Reaction: Jolie looking totally charmed by her Kung Fu Panda costar Jack Black, who was onstage presenting with that actress from Friends.

Best Twilight Crossover: Rob Pattinson brought that undead charm of his to the Oscars, where it was familiar to Twihards and everyone who's ever had lunch with a Hollywood agent.

Best On-Air Design: Whoever thought to put Daniel Craig and Sarah Jessica Parker on stage together.

Best Reaction: Seth Rogen and James Franco's half-baked response to the comedies of 2008. Dude, cinematographer Jadocs Kaminsky was so high!

Joke Least Likely to Reach the Billion People Around the World: Ben Stiller's crazy, bearded Joaquin Phoenix impersonation was funny, but a little inside considering how few people recognize Stiller anyway.

Assault With a Medley Weapon: The top-hat-and-tails number with Beyoncé, Zac Efron and the rest totally summed up the year in movies. And that year was 1936.

Most Likely to Spawn a "Who's in Your Five?" Commercial: The Best Supporting actor nomination five-way was like a presidential debate without all the humor.

Most Heartbreaking: Heath Ledger's family accepting his award.

Biggest Showstopper: Wirewalker Philippe Petit, the absolutely entertaining subject of documentary Man on Wire, balancing an Oscar on his chin while a billion people watched and wondered if it would fall. But for a man who once spent 45 minutes walking between the Twin Towers, well, that's probably no big deal.

Best Commercial: Coming in just ahead of the one for the website that helps you earn $5K a month working at home, the Tom Cruise-Jimmy Kimmel bit was funny like a house on fire.

Best Make-Good Decision: The loud and fast medley crammed full of action and comic book movies, because let's be honest: These were the best things that Hollywood had to offer last year, and The Dark Knight (not to mention Iron Man) got robbed. Take that, Reader.

Worst Make-Good Decision: After that whole medley thing, the movie about the wrinkly old baby beat Dark Knight and Iron Man. Obviously, there is no justice…except that meted out by costumed heroes

"Slumdog Millionaire" wins Oscar gold

By Steve Gorman and Dean Goodman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A ragtag group of Indian orphans triumphed at the Academy Awards on Sunday as "Slumdog Millionaire" took top honors with an against-all-odds love story that resonated with recession-weary moviegoers.

The small-budget British film -- shot in the teeming slums of Mumbai -- was named best picture as widely predicted and won seven other Oscars.

At the climax of the night, the stage was swarmed by jubilant members of the "Slumdog" cast and crew, including several school children who were plucked from Mumbai's shantytowns to appear in the movie.

British filmmaker Danny Boyle was named best director for the often dark but ultimately hopeful tale of a young orphan who risks it all for love and a shot at instant wealth as a TV game show contestant.

"It is a love story but is heavily disguised," he said. "The spine appears to be the game show but ... there's another story underneath, which is the love story,"

Adding to the international flavor of this year's Oscars, hosted by Australian stage and film star Hugh Jackman, three of the night's four acting awards went to non-Americans.

Kate Winslet of Britain was named best actress for her dramatic turn as a former Nazi prison guard who has a love affair with a teenage boy in "The Reader.

Penelope Cruz broke through as the first Spanish actress to claim an Academy Award, winning for her supporting role in the Woody Allen romance "Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

And Australian Heath Ledger, who died last year of an accidental prescription pill overdose, was named best supporting actor for his role as the evil Joker in the Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight." He became only the second performer after Peter Finch to win an Oscar posthumously.

Sean Penn, the lone American among the newly honored performers, was voted best actor for his portrait of slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk in the political drama "Milk.

'SLUMDOG' INJECTS BRIGHT NOTE

But "Slumdog" was the big winner. Besides best picture and best director, the film also earned Oscars for cinematography, sound mixing, film editing, original score and song.

Shot on a modest budget of $15 million, the film was orphaned at one point when it was dropped by financier Warner Independent Pictures, a division of Warner Bros. Fox Searchlight Pictures ultimately rescued the film and released it in November.

It went on to win raves from critics and crossed over from arthouse success to delight mainstream audiences, grossing nearly $100 million domestically to date.

The movie's triumph restored a kind of feel-good mood to the Oscars amid the global economic downturn, following several years in which dark dramas, "No Country for Old Men," "The Departed" and "Crash" topped the Oscars.

The only arena in which the film was overshadowed was in the acting categories, where A-list stars earned the nominations over the relatively unknown cast of "Slumdog."

Winslet, a six-time nominee, fought back tears when accepting her trophy and remembered a time as a child when she dreamed of winning it.

"I would be lying if I said I haven't made a version of this speech before. I think I was probably 8-years-old and staring into the bathroom mirror," she said.

Penn, who won an Oscar five years ago for his performance as a grieving father in "Mystic River," used his acceptance speech for "Milk" to condemn passage of California's recent ballot measure banning gay marriage as a "great shame."

The film's Oscar-winning screenwriter, Dustin Lance Black, a gay Mormon, struck a similar chord in his remarks from the stage, telling young gays and lesbian viewers, "...You are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value."

The night's biggest surprise came in the foreign-language film contest, with Japan's funereal drama "Departures" upsetting Israel's animated anti-war film "Waltz With Bashir.

Despite Oscar producers' hopes of rejuvenating the ceremony, early reviews of the show were largely negative.

The Los Angeles Times said Jackman "never radiated any real heat," and the Washington Post opined that his opening medley of songs lampooning the best picture nominees was "pointless and flat for all Jackman's workmanlike efforts to enliven it."

About

Lily Allen is the precocious daughter of actor/comedian Keith Allen and film producer mom, Alison Owen. Despite a privileged background, Allen was somewhat of a handful growing up, often running away and getting expelled from various schools. By 15, Allen knew school wasn't for her, so she dropped out and eventually started working on music. Lily's sound draws on her parent's music collection, which included such groundbreaking, female-fronted acts as Rip, Rig and Panic, the Slits and Blondie. But her fondness for hip-hop and urban storytellers also shines through both in her style of delivery and in her rock steady beats. Allen's reputation as a formidable voice from the street grew via her myspace page, and that led to her deal with Parlaphone. In late 2006, Allen's single "Smile" hit No. 1 on the UK charts. In 2007, Allen's debut album, Alright, Still, was released in the U.S., followed by It's Not Me, It's You in February 2009.

Review

Lily Allen isn't just a pop star. She's a genre. Allen's fizzy, fiercely attitudinal 2007 debut, Alright, Still, sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide, made the 23-year-old Londoner one of Britain's tabloid fixtures and spawned an industry of Lily wanna-be's — seemingly every month, the U.K. record business disgorges a new songstress with a MySpace page full of post-feminist provocations set to perky tunes. Meanwhile, Allen-ism has migrated across the Atlantic: Is there any doubt where Christian popster-turned-bi-curious succès de scandale Katy Perry learned her best moves?

But as Allen's long-awaited second album makes clear, no one does Lily like Lily. It's Not Me, It's You is far from perfect, but it sounds fantastic. With producer Greg Kurstin (the Bird and the Bee) at her side, Allen has gotten more musically eclectic, jettisoning the thumping rock-steady of Alright, Still without sacrificing catchiness or dance-floor bounce. The new album has a peppy electro underpinning, but all sorts of styles bubble up: Eurodisco, oompah and, in the galloping "Not Fair," a kind of spaghetti-Westernized synth pop. Any of the dozen tracks could be a single, from the rousing "22" to "Who'd Have Known," the ballad with the album's most surefire hook.

Allen remains a child of the hip-hop era: a pop singer with a rapper's love of the well-turned couplet and well-aimed dis. "Not Fair" picks up where Alright, Still's "Not Big" left off, railing against a bloke who's a dud in bed. "Oh, I lie here in a wet patch/In the middle of the bed/I'm feeling pretty damn hard done by/I spent ages giving head," gripes Allen.

There is melancholy beneath the harsh words in "Not Fair": Allen is bummed about her hapless lover because she actually likes the guy. It's the kind of song that made Alright, Still so fresh — a look at love and sex, in all their gory details, through the eyes of a young woman who brooks no bullshit.

But It's Not Me offers few such moments — and worse, few laughs. "The Fear" is a rant about materialism sung in the voice of a would-be starlet. Allen's rich-bitch protagonist just wants to wear "fuckloads of diamonds"; the chorus is meant to be where Allen drives home her big point: "I don't know what's right and what's real anymore/I don't know how I'm meant to feel anymore." In fact, "The Fear" is one gigantic cliché, made worse by the sneer with which Allen delivers it.

And so it goes on It's Not Me. There's "Him," in which Allen wonders if God has "taken smack or cocaine." There's "Everyone's At It," a Big Statement about a drug-addled society. ("So your daughter's depressed/Well, get her straight on the Prozac/But little do you know/She already takes crack.") There's "Fuck You," an anti-George W. Bush protest. (Good timing.) No longer content to be a quirky confessional songwriter, Allen has decided that she is a "social critic," a job that she lacks the insight and the maturity to pull off.

By far the best moments on the new album come in ballads like "Who'd Have Known" and "Chinese," where Allen drops the state-of-the-nation pretensions, tones down the snark and plays it more or less straight. It's Not Me is full of disagreeable characters, but ickiest of all isn't the crackhead socialite or the loutish boyfriend or even George W. Bush. It's not them, Lily — it's you.

Jessica Simpson's ripped pants confession

Jessica Simpson and her boyfriend

Jessica Simpson has ripped her pants "every time" she's performed at Madison Square Garden.

The US singer has now taken to wearing a "skort" to prevent the embarrassing problem happening again.

Speaking ahead of a show in New York show last week, Jessica said: "Every time I've performed at Madison Square Garden, my pants have completely ripped in half.

"I decided to wear a little 'skort' - not a skirt, but some shorts just so they wouldn't split."

Although Jessica avoided another wardrobe malfunction at her Valentine's Day show in Rochester, New York, on Saturday (14.02.09) she did mess up when she dedicated a song to her boyfriend.

Introducing 'You're my Sunday', a song she wrote for Tony Romo, she said: "I'm celebrating the life I'm living right now. Somebody came into my life and made me see myself in the best mirror possible, so I wrote this song for her."

Jessica then joked she meant she'd written the song for her dog, Daisy before looking to Tony and saying: "Sorry, baby. This song's for you."

Before launching into her hit 'Do You Know' she also told the crowd: "This song makes me want to suck face. I love kissing. With the right lips, of course."

Madonna's sham relationship

Madonna's relationship with Jesus Luz is a sham, according to friends.

Pals insist the 50-year-old singer's romance with the 22-year-old Brazilian model is merely a publicity stunt to promote her latest tour, and make estranged husband Guy Ritchie jealous.

A source told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "It's a classic Madonna publicity stunt - but it suits both parties well. Despite her advancing years, she looks like she's still got what it takes to date a guy in his 20s.

"And Jesus is getting a boost of publicity as well. Everyone's a winner."

Madonna and Jesus - who met on a photo shoot for US magazine W in Brazil in December - were spotted attending a New York Kabbalah centre on Saturday (14.02.09), although they arrived separately.

The source continued: "Taking Jesus to Kabbalah is a masterstroke as she always historically introduces her lovers to the religion."

Meanwhile, Guy is believed to be dismissive of the relationship.

The friend added: "Guy saw the pictures of her and Jesus and together and laughed out loud. He sees it as another publicity exercise."

Madonna recently won a court order to have the sons the couple raise, Rocco, eight, and three-year-old David move to the US with her.

The pair's divorce is expected to be made permanent any day now.

Rap mogul "Suge" Knight injured in fracas

Rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight, the head of Death Row Records, is shown at the premiere of "Half Past Dead" in Los Angeles in this November 7, 2002 file photograph. [Agencies]

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona - Rap music mogul Marion "Suge" Knight was treated in the hospital for facial injuries after being injured in a fight at a local hotel, Scottsdale police said on Monday.

Security at the W hotel in the city near Phoenix called police after two groups of guests exchanged "heated words in the VIP area" early on Monday, Scottsdale police said in a news release.

Shortly after police officers arrived at the hotel, they saw a man punch Knight, 43, twice in the head, police said.

Officers used Taser stun guns to break up the fracas and arrested two men -- identified as Robert Carnes and Leon Anderson -- who were subsequently charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct, the police report added.

Knight, co-founder of the rap label Death Row Records, was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for facial injuries, police said.

Scottsdale police did not immediately return a call seeking further information on Knight's injuries or condition. The Scottsdale hospital cited in the police report said it had no record of having treated him.

Knight who helped promote such rap stars as Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur in the 1990s, was in the Phoenix area to attend the National Basketball Association All-Star game on Sunday night.

His career has been overshadowed in recent years by run-ins with the law.

In August, he was arrested in Las Vegas on drug and assault charges after he was suspected of punching his girlfriend and pulling a knife on her during an argument outside a strip club.

Knight was jailed in October 1996 for violating his probation on a previous assault case by allegedly kicking a man during a scuffle at a Las Vegas hotel.

Colin Farrell single again

Irish actor Colin Farrell holds his award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy for his role in "In Bruges'', at the 66th annual Golden Globe awards in Beverly Hills, California January 11, 2009. [Agencies]

Colin Farrell is single again.

The Irish actor has been dumped by writer Emma Forrest - who began secretly dating early last year - because of his lack of commitment.

An insider told In Touch Weekly magazine: "He would not introduce her to his family. She was also upset that he didn't thank her at the Golden Globe Awards."

Farrell - who picked up the Best Actor award at last month's ceremony for his role as a hitman in 'In Bruges' - was believed to have moved to Los Angeles so he could be near Emma.

Emma has confirmed the pair are no longer dating, but insists they will remain friends.

Colin recently sparked romance rumours after he was reportedly seen locking lips with Salma Hayek.

A source said: "He held her face and kissed her several times. It was very intimate, not like they were just pals."

Salma is back with her former fiance, businessman Francois-Henri Pinault
