"Race to Witch Mountain" takes first at box office

Cast members (from L-R) Alexander Ludwig, Carla Gugino, Dwayne Johnson and AnnaSophia Robb pose at the premiere of the movie "Race to Witch Mountain" at El Capitan theatre in Hollywood, California March 11, 2009.[Agencies]

LOS ANGELES- The Disney family adventure "Race to Witch Mountain" outran superhero movie "Watchmen" to take the top spot with $25 million in this weekend's contest at the North American box office.

The reworking of the 1975 action adventure "Escape to Witch Mountain" stars Dwayne ("The Rock") Johnson, who also headlined Disney's "The Game Plan."

"We had a big family audience, but about 20 percent of the audience was unaccompanied adults," said Mark Zoradi, president of the studios motion pictures group at Walt Disney Co. "There was a little bit of people looking back toward the first movie."

He declined to make overall projections for "Witch Mountain" but said, with schools out for spring break over the next few weeks, it looks to be "in for a good solid run."

"Watchmen," an adaptation of a cult comic book series, saw its weekend box office take fall 67 percent from a week earlier to $18.1 million, distributor Warner Bros Pictures said.

The drop was in line with expectations and similar to the one after openings of other "tent-pole" movies, said Jeff Goldstein, executive vice president and general sales manager of domestic distribution at the studio owned by Time Warner Inc.

He said the studio believes "Watchmen" has "tremendous staying power" and will make a projection for overall receipts next week.

The film's take for its first two weeks was $86 million.

The debut of horror film remake "The Last House on the Left" came in No. 3 for the weekend with $14.7 million.

Produced by Rogue Pictures/Universal Pictures, the film stars Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter in a refashioning of Wes Craven's 1972 horror thriller.

It fell far short of the more than $40 million opening last month of another horror genre remake, "Friday the 13th."

Universal is a unit of General Electric Co's NBC Universal. Rogue is a unit of closely held Relativity Media.

Fox's Liam Neeson thriller "Taken" slipped to No. 4 with $6.7 million in its seventh weekend. It has earned $126.8 million to date. Fox is owned by News Corp.

Actor/writer/director Tyler Perry's "Madea Goes to Jail" dropped to No. 5 with $5.1 million, taking its haul to date to $83.2 million. The black-themed comedy was released by Lionsgate, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.

No. 6 for the week, "Slumdog Millionaire," has so far earned $132.6 million, moving the tale of impoverished Indian orphans into the top-10 highest grossing Best Picture Oscar winners of all time, according to Sheila DeLoach, senior vice president of distribution at Fox Searchlight.

Lindsay Lohan faces jail

Actress Lindsay Lohan arrives to attend the Stand Up For A Cure concert with musician Dave Matthews in New York in this file photo taken September 10, 2008. Beverly Hills police said an arrest warrant has been issued for Lohan that stems from her 2007 conviction for drunken driving. The $50,000 warrant was issued by the Beverly Hills Superior Court, the police said in a statement issued on March 13, 2009. They declined to state the reason for the issuance of the warrant. Photo taken September 10, 2008. [Agencies]

Lindsay Lohan faces jail for breaching her probation.

A warrant was issued for the actress' arrest on Friday (13.03.09), claiming she has broken the terms of her 2007 sentence for driving under the influence (DUI) but the 'Mean Girls' star's attorney insists the court summons is "a misunderstanding."

Her lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, said in a statement: "Since her case was resolved, Ms. Lohan has been in compliance with all the terms and conditions of her probation and all orders of the court. "

The warrant issued on Friday was, in our view, born out of a misunderstanding which I am confident I can clear up next week." No reason has been given for the warrant, though gossip website TMZ claims representatives of the alcohol treatment programme Lindsay is supposed to attend reported that she had not been complying with her probation terms.

Beverly Hills police officers refused to confirm the claims and say are not actively looking for the 22-year-old star. Police Lt. Mark Rosen said: "We are not anticipating her surrender this weekend. But if she comes in contact with police, she's subject to arrest.

As for why we're not actively looking for her, that's not our procedure for this type of warrant. "Her attorney is hoping to resolve this issue in the coming week. If it's not resolved, I'm sure we'll negotiate her voluntary surrender."

A court hearing has been scheduled for Monday (16.03.09) morning, where a spokesperson for the Los Angeles district attorney says the presiding judge "has indicated Ms. Lohan should be in attendance." Lindsay could be jailed if found to have breached her probation.

The actress was arrested in May 2007 and again in July 2007 for driving under the influence and possession of cocaine. The arrests led her to serve just 84 minutes in jail. She was also sentenced to 10 hours of community service and three years of probation.

This is not the first time the John, 31, has separated from Jennifer, 40.

Charlize Theron happy to bare all

Charlize Theron thinks it's easier for an actress to strip off on screen than it is to convey raw emotions.

Charlize Theron finds it easy to go naked on screen.

The actress found it harder to convey her character's emotion in new movie 'The Burning Plain' - in which she plays a self-abusing, sex addicted mother - than take her clothes off.

She said: "Being naked is one of those things I think people think of in an isolated, compartmentalised way, but sometimes it's harder to do a scene where you have to bear a raw emotion of pain or vulnerability.

"That kind of nakedness is sometimes much harder than taking your clothes off."

Oscar winner Charlize, who co-produced 'The Burning Plain', also revealed she never thought she would ever step behind the camera on her films.

The 33-year-old star added: "If you' asked me ten years ago if I would produce, I probably would have said, 'You're crazy.' But it's become one of those things that the older I've gotten and the more I've done this, the more I realise I love film making.

"It's not the idea of playing a role and showing up and just acting and doing my thing, it's the collaborative aspect of it that I really love."

Slap-happy UK songstress Lilly Allen recently punched on with a member of the paparazzi after he reportedly ran into her car in London.

Allen, who has been famous for her wild outbursts and frenzied attacks on the press, lunged at the photographer after he "accidentally" rammed into the back of her vehicle.

It has been said she "punched and kicked him repeatedly" and threw a bottle of water at him.

It is believed British authorities will be investigating the attack, and the 23-year-old could face charges over the incident.

Allen, if charged, could have difficulties traveling to the US, where she is about to embark on a nationwide tour.

Allen has faced assault charges previously. Her situation, if she is prosecuted, could mirror that of troubled songstress Amy Winehouse, who had her US Visa jeopardized after allegedly assaulting a fan last September.

As a result of the assault charges, she had to forgo her performance at the United States premiere music festival, Coachella.

Michael Jackson to add concerts after sellout

U.S. pop star Michael Jackson gestures during a news conference at the O2 Arena in London in this recent photo from March 5, 2009. [Agencies]

LONDON- Michael Jackson will add more shows to the 10 London concerts already announced this summer as his comeback to live music, organizers said Wednesday.

The 50-year-old singer has been a virtual recluse since his acquittal on child abuse charges in a 2005 trial, his last full set of live concerts was 12 years ago and he has not recorded an album of new music since "Invincible" in 2001.

Last week he announced his long-awaited comeback at London's O2 Arena, where he plans a Las Vegas-style "residency" with a series of 10 concerts beginning on July 8.

"The pre-sale 10 shows at The O2 that went on sale this morning at 7 a.m. have already sold out," said Outside Organization, the PR company representing promoter AEG Live.

"Due to the incredible level of interest, Michael Jackson has allowed AEG Live to add extra shows."

It was not immediately clear how many concerts would be added. The website of music magazine Rolling Stone reported 12 extra concerts had been booked.

AEG Live said last week it may extend Jackson's London series and launch gigs elsewhere in the world if the demand was there.

Jackson is still the "King of Pop" to his legions of fans despite his sometimes bizarre behavior and appearance in recent years. He has sold around 750 million records, won 13 Grammys and is regarded as one of the biggest pop acts of all time.

Organizers said fans should log on to website www.michaeljacksonlive.com for information on the additional shows.

Chris Brown withdraws from Kids' Choice Awards

Chris Brown and Rihanna perform during the Z100 Jingle Ball in New York December 13, 2008. [Agencies]

LOS ANGELES- Singer Chris Brown on Wednesday withdrew from Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards because of the controversy from criminal charges against him for allegedly attacking his girlfriend, pop star Rihanna.

Brown, who is known for hit songs like "Run It!" and "Forever," was up for top male singer at the awards show airing March 28 on U.S. cable television channel Nickelodeon.

The 19-year-old R&B star, who is accused of assaulting and making criminal threats against Rihanna on the eve of the February 8 Grammy Awards, also was up for best song for "Kiss Kiss." He was competing against Rihanna in that category for her "Don't Stop the Music."

Brown, who was nominated before the incident with Rihanna, faced criticism from special interest groups and in blog postings around the Internet by people who argued it set a bad example for children for him to stay on as a nominee.

"Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding the incident last month has shifted the focus from the music to whether he should be allowed to be among the nominated," Brown's representatives said in a statement on Wednesday.

"While Chris would like to speak to his fans directly about this and other issues, pending legal proceedings preclude his doing so at this time," the statement said.

As Brown entered a courtroom to face the charges against him on March 5, a message posted on his MySpace page urged fans to vote for him for the Kids' Choice Awards. The message has since been removed.

Brown, who celebrity news outlets report is back together with Rihanna, faces up to four years in prison if convicted.

Jennifer Lopez felt sorry for Britney

Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez poses at the premiere of the movie "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" at the Mann's Village theatre in Westwood, California December 8, 2008. [Agencies]

Jennifer Lopez sympathises with Britney Spears' "painful" breakdown.

Jennifer, who has kept a low-profile since marrying husband Marc Anthony and becoming a mother, was shocked by Britney's erratic behaviour in 2008 - which saw her hospitalised for mental health issues.

Talking of Britney's breakdown, Jennifer said: "That was painful to watch."

Britney's problems escalated in January 2008, shortly after her divorce from Kevin Federline. She was hospitalised after refusing to return sons Sean Preston, three, and Jayden James, two, to Kevin.

Jennifer - who was previously married to Cuban-born waiter Ojani Noa and dancer Cris Judd - also says she can relate to Britney's heartbreak following her marriage split.

Jennifer, 39, added: "I understood the pressure she was going through, having been through a divorce, having money, having people depend on you. It will destroy you."

The singer-and-actress revealed she and Marc - who have one year old twins Max and Emme together - have their own way of handling disagreements to ensure their relationship stays healthy.

She explained to InTouch weekly magazine: "If one of us has a complaint, the other one has to listen, no matter how difficult. We have to see if we care enough to change it and if we do care, then we have to change it."

Jennifer also praised Marc's positive attitude to fatherhood, saying: "I can ask him to get up in the middle of the night if one of the kids wakes up. Every single time he'll say OK. That's a huge thing. If you have a partner who doesn't think it's their job - and I know people who think babies are a woman's job - then that's really hard."

Jennifer Aniston's ferret fear

Jennifer Aniston has revealed she would be "put off" dating a man if she discovered he owned a ferret.

Jennifer Aniston would never date a man who owns a ferret.

The 'Marley and Me' actress, who is currently romancing musician John Mayer, would be horrified if she discovered a prospective suitor kept the furry creature at his home.

When asked if there was a nightmare pet which would deter her from dating someone, Jennifer replied: "A ferret. That would put me off!"

This isn't the first time the 40-year-old actress has revealed her dislike for ferrets.

In 2004, Jennifer played a free-spirited woman who owned a ferret in 'Along Came Polly' - but couldn't warm to the animal during shooting.

She said: "I felt sad because I wasn't a big fan of the ferret. It's not the warmest, cuddliest thing. Of all the animals out there to work with, a ferret wouldn't be my first choice. But you know, I hope I pretended as though I really liked it."

Ferrets aren't the only animals Jennifer has had problems with.

The former 'Friends' beauty has also revealed she annoyed her childhood pet dog Dimitri so much it used to bite her all the time.

She told BANG Showbiz: "When I was little my dog Dimitri didn't like me very much. He was a poodle and I thought he was something that I could play with and ride. No wonder he bit me!

"After that I always thought I'd never be a dog person - and now I have two wonderful dogs. One of them, Dolly, was rescued from Mexico."
