NEW YORK- The death of celebrity disc jockey DJ AM was caused by an accidental drug overdose, and eight different substances were found in his body, the New York City Medical Examiner's office said on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old disc jockey, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, died last month from a lethal cocktail of cocaine, cold medicine and prescription drugs, it said.

A toxicology report found traces of the drugs used in the painkillers OxyContin and Vicodin and sedatives Ativan, Klonopin and Xanax. It also found levamisole, a cancer treatment drug that is also used to cut cocaine.

Goldstein's music appeared on the albums of artists, including Madonna and Will Smith. He survived a plane crash with Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker in 2008 and was once engaged to reality TV star Nicole Richie.

His death was ruled an accident and police have said no foul play was suspected.

Pattinson: 'I'm not an attention seeker'

Robert Pattinson has insisted that he is not interested in being a celebrity.

The 23-year-old has become a tabloid favourite since taking on the role of vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise.

Speaking to AnOther Man magazine, he said: "Annoyingly, there are so few parts I feel I can add anything to, or that I want to do.

"I don't want to be an actor for the sake of it. I don't find any particular pleasure in being an attention seeker."

He went on to say that he had no idea the Twilight saga would be so successful at the box office, explaining: "It's strange because even though the figures show that the books were successful and sold millions of copies, you couldn't even buy them in London.

"I tried a couple of bookshops and they weren't available. Hardly anyone I knew had read them apart from one girl, a friend of my sister. I had no idea at all."

He added: "I'd seen Kristen Stewart in Into the Wild and some of the director Catherine Hardwicke's other films, and that's all I thought it was, something really small."

Megan Fox bullied over acting ambition

Megan Fox bullied over acting ambition

Megan Fox was targeted by school bullies because she wanted to be an actress.

The 'Jennifer's Body' star made her ambitions clear when she was growing up, but it didn't go down well with her female classmates.

The 23-year-old beauty is quoted as saying: "There were some evil girls in my school and I went to Christian high school. I was fifteen and everybody knew that my aspiration in life was to become an actress.

"One girl came to school on Halloween in a black leather catsuit and everyone thought she was cat woman. She answered, 'No I am Megan Fox.' She was making fun of me.

"I didn't say anything to her. I was really shy."

Megan - who is regularly voted the world's sexiest woman - has previously said she found it easier to bond with boys than girls when she was growing up.

She said: "I've always gotten along better with boys. That rubbed some people the wrong way. I was not, ever for a second, popular. Everyone hated me, and I was a total outcast, my friends were always guys, I have a very aggressive personality, and girls didn't like me for that. I've had only one great girlfriend my whole life."

Jackson reigns at box office, in advance of film

Jackson reigns at box office, in advance of film

A woman walks past a memorial banner that fans have signed at the L.A. Live complex for the opportunity to purchase tickets for a special showing of the "Michael Jackson's This Is It" movie in Los Angeles, California, September 25, 2009.[Agencies]

LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson's fans are ready to rock with him one last time, as next month's "This Is It" movie about the late pop star breaks records for advance ticket sales, the studio behind the film said on Monday.

Based on rehearsal footage of Jackson taken in the weeks before the "Thriller" singer's death, the film does not open until October 28. But early sales began on Sunday, resulting in hundreds of sold-out shows in North America alone.

Cities with particularly strong sales include Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston and New York, said Sony Pictures Entertainment, the division of Sony Co that produced the film from "High School Musical" director Kenny Ortega.

Outside the United States, more than $1 million in tickets were sold in Japan on the first day they were available, which was a record, Sony Pictures said.

In London, "This Is It" fans bought more than 30,000 tickets on the first day, which eclipsed advance interest in the "Harry Potter" and "The Lord of the Rings" films, which were popular in Britain.

Record ticket sales were also reported in Holland, Sweden, Belgium and New Zealand, Sony Pictures said.

While online sales were high, fans also lined sidewalks waiting for tickets in Paris, Bangkok and Munich, Sony Pictures said.

U.S. authorities are investigating what lead to Jackson's death from an overdose of prescription drugs on June 25, focusing on doctors who treated him.

The rehearsal footage for "This Is It" was produced as Jackson prepared for a series of 50 sold-out comeback shows in London that were supposed to begin on July 13. Sony paid $60 million for the footage to make the movie.

Chris Brown returns to the stage

Chris Brown returns to the stage

Chris Brown will make his musical comeback next month.

The singer - who hasn't played a concert since assaulting former girlfriend Rihanna in February - will headline Power 105.1's Powerhouse '09 concert alongside Keri Hilson, The-Dream, Trey Songz, Mario, Day26 and Ginuwine on October 27.

But music industry insiders claim the concert is a step down for Chris compared to the shows he was playing before the assault.

One promoter - who is not involved in the New Jersey concert - is quoted by website MSNBC as saying: "This is a pretty C-list line-up. Keri Hilson is good, Ginuwine has some following, but this is nothing like the line-up that would have surrounded him this time last year. Chris was the Michael Jackson heir apparent, he had huge endorsement deals. This isn't the sort of show you would have expected from him before he got in trouble."

According to industry experts, the 'Run It' star is still not considered a "safe" booking but knows he needs to start rebuilding his career.

A producer said: "Chris isn't advertiser-safe yet - his image has a long way to go. But for this show, he'll draw a crowd, so the producers of the show are willing to pay. Just because he pleaded guilty doesn't mean that all his fans have gone away. He's got to start getting back onto the scene at some point."

Chris punched, kicked and choked Rihanna in his rented car in February after attending a pre-Grammy Awards party.

He received his sentence - five years probation and six months community labour - in August, and was left distraught when the judge banned him from contacting or seeing Rihanna for five years.

He has admitted being ashamed of what happened during a TV interview, and confessed he would struggle to cope if Rihanna found love with a new man.

Indonesian artist Suwage takes on porn law, censorship

Indonesian artist Suwage takes on porn law, censorship

Indonesian artist Agus Suwage poses in his studio in Yogyakarta, Central Java September 28, 2009.[Agencies]

SINGAPORE - Indonesian artist Agus Suwage knows what it is like to run up against the religious conservatives. Four years ago, he was hauled into parliament, where lawmakers accused him of blasphemy and of producing pornography dressed up as art.

Today, facing an even more restrictive climate in Indonesia, Suwage refuses to be silenced and has made those restrictions the focus of his art.

His latest exhibition, which opened at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute this month, highlights what he sees as a growing conservatism in majority Muslim but officially secular Indonesia.

Many of the works probably could not be shown at a big public exhibition space in Indonesia following the passage of a controversial anti-pornography law last year.

"Art and this law cannot be reconciled. There is art and then there is this law and they are very far apart," Suwage told Reuters in an interview.

"There are more important things to address in law than pornography, like education. But everyone wants to win a political point and on this issue the politics come easily."

Suwage's latest works are a series of prints of female nudes overlaid with the actual text of Indonesia's 2008 anti-pornography law, under which a person can be charged for any public activity that "incites sexual desire."

Members of Indonesia's arts community have warned that the law could be used to crack down on traditional artforms such as Balinese or Papuan nude statues, as well as contemporary artists like Suwage.

In several of his new prints, the area around the nude's genitals has been cut out completely. In a nod to the issue of censorship, the cut-outs in three artworks have been filled with images of Suwage covering his eyes, ears or mouth.

Suwage says most Indonesians in the predominantly Muslim country are still moderates who practice a broad-minded form of Islam, but he realizes that only a handful of galleries would dare to exhibit his new works.

"I think there would be some who are brave enough."

The artist has already had a taste of what it's like to fall foul of the hardliners and extremists.

In 2005, Suwage's installation, Pinkswing Park -- which depicted a man and woman frolicking nude in an Eden-like garden, and featured a pink swing fashioned from a rickshaw carriage -- led to threats from the Islamic Defenders Front, or FPI, a vigilante group known for smashing up bars and clubs.

"The FPI approached the exhibition organizers and threatened them. They said, 'If this artwork isn't covered, we will attack with 250 people'," said Suwage. The curators complied, even though the genitals of Suwage's subjects were already covered by modest white circles.

"But then, the FPI went to the police to report that the work was against the law and against religion. I had to sit in hearings in parliament and make my case with my lawyer," he said.

A print by Indonesian artist Agus Suwage, "8 BAB 44 Pasal #6", combines the text of Indonesia's anti-pornography law with a female nude.[Agencies]

The police eventually dropped the case against him but for Suwage, the issue is still very much alive.

Indonesia has traditionally been a bastion of moderate Islam, where Islamic beliefs are often adapted to fit local customs and even animist traditions.

However, in the 10 years since repressive ex-President Suharto stepped down, a flourishing culture of free expression has also meant a stronger voice for religious conservatives, some of whom have found support in lawmakers wanting to appear more pious.

"Some parts of Indonesia are getting more strict," Suwage said, pointing to parts of the country where women have to wear headscarves or are not allowed to walk alone at night. "Why is this happening in Indonesia?"

Britney Spears' sweet splurge

Britney Spears spent $3,000 on candy in one afternoon.

The 'Womanizer' singer splashed out the staggering sum at the Sugar Factory, which is located inside Las Vegas' Mirage hotel, which she visited with sons, Sean Preston, four, and three-year-old Jayden James, and boyfriend Jason Trawick on Sunday (27.09.09).

A source said: "She spent about $3,000 and walked out of the store with 10 bags. She got a bunch of candy and shirts for her kids and got a bunch of the couture lollipops to give to her back-up dancers."

Among the items Britney, who was in Las Vegas for the final US show of her 'Circus' world tour, bought were a box of Sugar Factor milk chocolate and 25 $25 lollipops.

After paying for the items the store sent another $2,500-worth of candy to Britney's room at the Mirage.

Britney pulled out all the stops for her final American show.

Barry Manilow and pop star Lance Bass were in the audience, and Britney spiced up the routine to 'Breathe On Me' by singling out Lance for a sizzling lap dance.

She also performed at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino on Saturday (26.09.09), as former Spice Girls star Mel B and 'Hannah Montana' actress Miley Cyrus looked on.

Scholars study Springsteen during weekend event

Scholars study Springsteen during weekend event

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Hold still, Bruce — this won't hurt a bit!

Scholars from around the world are dissecting the Springsteen legend this weekend in New Jersey.

"Glory Days: A Bruce Springsteen Symposium" continues through Sunday at Monmouth University. The no-holds-barred intellectual romp, coinciding with Springsteen's 60th birthday, was organized by Virginia Tech and Penn State Altoona.

And yes, the scholars do get the comedic irony of studying a man who "learned more from a three-minute record than he ever learned from school."

The festivities include several pilgrimages to the landmark Stone Pony nightclub, down the road in Asbury Park, N.J.

Educators spent Friday night singing, hollering and chanting a curse phrase at the impish urging of rock pioneer Gary U.S. Bonds, whose performance brought the house down. Springsteen resurrected Bonds' career in the '80s by writing his comeback hit, "This Little Girl."

Professors, many of them veterans of dozens of concerts — one boasted 150-plus — vied to get out their first-person tales from the concert "pit."

Fans of Run of the (Steel) Mill, Springsteen's former band, also entered the symposium fray.

Springsteen has "saved my life many times," said textbook publisher Patty Pappas of Toronto, who detoured to the symposium en route to next week's Meadowlands concerts. "If you're sad, happy, angry — if you want to scream, rant and rave — there's always a song that can express it."

Come the light of day, though, it's back to the books — make that the Power Point presentations.

"Fun?" said presenter Francesco Cassino of Rome, Italy, clearly startled by the question during his reverie on harmonic sequences. His expression grew otherworldly. "It's my life," he said Saturday, expressing the common theme of fans everywhere.

"His music can call us to a higher purpose," said Dr. James Kelly of Carlow University in Pittsburgh, calling Springsteen a vehicle for discussions on social causes, war, race, gender and class.

When the music that was to accompany Kelly's presentation didn't play, the audience told him to stop talking and fix it. From then on, Kelly — who referred to Springsteen as a "cool rockin' daddy" — jackhammered through his academic talk while competing with the music — blasts of "Sprung from cages on Highway 9!" and "Baby, this town rips the bones from your back!"

Discussion topics were dizzying. Springsteen and psychology; the movies; spirituality; American culture; history; the criminal justice system; the online community; family.

Bruce Geeks worship Springsteen as a storyteller and a poet. References abounded to the likes of writers Jack Kerouac and Flannery O'Connor; Springsteen has said O'Connor's work helped inspire the "Nebraska" album.

There were down-home moments, as well.

Fellow blue-collar rocker Joe Grushecky sheepishly admitted taking a sick day from his regular job as a special education teacher to collaborate with Springsteen. His peeved employer set out to track him down.

Grushecky's mother called her son to pass along his boss' message. Patti Scialfa, Springsteen's wife, took the call.

"Patti hands me the phone and says, `It's your mom,'" recalled Grushecky, who shushed Springsteen while calling back his other boss, and feigning illness.

When Grusheky's kids were little, they thought Springsteen was just "another of Daddy's buddies who played guitar. And lived in a bigger house."

The "Springsteen and Social Consciousness" panel stressed that the boss puts his money — and his energies — where his mouth is. Singer-activist Jen Chapin, daughter of the late Harry Chapin, said Springsteen has raised millions of dollars for grass root causes including hunger.

"I've dealt with a lot of celebrities," said Chapin, giving Springsteen an A-plus for his "integrity" and determination to "follow through on his promises."

The symposium, also held in 2005, is the brainchild of 52-show veteran Dr. Mark Bernhard, director of continuing and professional education at Virginia Tech.

"Bruce and his music, through his lyrics as well as his performances and his social consciousness ... speak to the common man or woman," Bernhard said. "He resonates with many of us" — in all walks of life.

Lily Allen's diarrhoea dilemma

Lily Allen's diarrhoea dilemma

Lily Allen once performed live despite having chronic diarrhoea.

The 'It's Not Fair' singer's worst on-stage experience was when she fell ill with a stomach bug during a show in the US.

However, Lily was so desperate not to disappoint fans she refused to go backstage and visit a bathroom until she had finished the full set.

She explained to Q magazine: "The worst was being on stage in Seattle two years ago and I came down with diarrhoea but I still went on. I was desperate for a poo the whole way through. At the end of the show I went to the toilet and it would not stop.

"The crowd were going, 'Lily! Lily!', for an encore. I didn't feel I could send anyone out and say, 'Will you lot shut up, she's having a c**p', but that was the truth."

Lily is not the only musician to suffer from an upset stomach during a show.

Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt was so unwell during a concert at the Giants Stadium in New Jersey - which seats 80,000 people - he soiled himself on stage.

He revealed: "I had stomach flu or something, I came down from a jump and was like, 'That's not good!' I was throwing up before I went on."

After the smelly mishap a bucket was placed at the side of the stage which Mike used as a toilet seven times during the show.

Filmmaker Roman Polanski's arrest to spark extradition fight

Filmmaker Roman Polanski's arrest to spark extradition fight

ZURICH/LOS ANGELES - Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski, whose tumultuous life has overshadowed his film work, was arrested this weekend in Zurich setting up a U.S. extradition on a 1978 arrest warrant stemming from the rape of a 13-year-old girl.

Polanski, 76, was taken into custody after arriving in Switzerland where he was to receive a prize at the Zurich Film Festival on Sunday. He now faces a battle over extradition in that country, and perhaps even a new Los Angeles trial in the 30-year-old case in which he has already pleaded guilty.

The director fled the United States on the eve of his 1978 sentencing because he believed a judge might overrule his plea and put him in jail for 50 years. But a 2008 film documentary has prompted new questions of judicial misconduct, and his lawyers have tried unsuccessfully to get his case dismissed.

Los Angeles attorneys Bart Dalton, Dough Dalton and Chad Hummell said they were unaware of any extradition and different lawyers would handle that case.

Polanski is a French citizen and for years has avoided countries that have U.S. extradition treaties. He has never returned to Los Angeles, where in 1969 his pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate, was murdered by Charles Manson's cult.

French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand was "stunned" to hear about the arrest, his office said, adding President Nicolas Sarkozy was following the case and hoped the matter could be resolved, allowing Polanski to return to his family.

"We are going to try to lift the arrest warrant in Zurich ... the (extradition) convention between Switzerland and the United States is not very clear," Polanski's lawyer, Georges Kiejman, told France Info radio.

LONG ARM OF THE LAW

Los Angeles County District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said her office learned last week Polanski would be in Zurich and sent a provisional arrest warrant to the Swiss.

Gibbons could not say when an extradition might take place and that if Polanski did return, it "would be up to the court to determine what will happen to Mr. Polanski."

The Swiss Federal Justice Department said the extradition warrant and any final decision could be challenged in court.

Polanski was initially arrested in the United States in 1977 and charged with giving drugs and alcohol to the minor and having unlawful sex with her at actor Jack Nicholson's Hollywood home. Nicholson was not in the house at the time.

The director maintained the girl was sexually experienced and consented. Polanski spent 42 days in prison undergoing psychiatric tests and eventually agreed to plead guilty and receive a sentence of time served.

The case was the subject of a 2008 film documentary "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired" that included interviews with the victim, Samantha Geimer of Hawaii, and lawyers for both sides.

It argues, in part, that Polanski was the victim of prosecutorial and judicial misconduct. In a 2008 interview, Geimer told Reuters Polanski should not face any jail time.

Based on what they said was new evidence in the film, Polanski's lawyers tried to have the case dismissed, but were denied their attempt earlier this year by a Los Angeles judge.

Los Angeles criminal defense specialist Steve Cron, who is unaffiliated with the case, said Polanski's attorneys might now agree to extradition believing the charges could be dropped.

Born to Polish-Jewish parents in 1933, Polanski's family were Holocaust victims, although he survived to become a brilliant filmmaker.

His first full-length feature, "Knife in the Water," won a number of awards, and his reputation grew with "Repulsion," his study of a woman terrified by sex who becomes a murderer.

Polanski scored a huge hit in the United States with 1968 horror thriller "Rosemary's Baby," and another with 1974's Chinatown," a stylish thriller starring Nicholson that was nominated for 11 Academy Awards.

"Tess" (1979) also earned him an Oscar nomination, and Polanski finally won his only best director Oscar for 2002 film "The Pianist," the story of a Jewish-Polish musician who sees his world collapse with the outbreak of World War Two.

Polanski is married to French actress Emmanuelle Seigner with whom he has two children.

Gay couples as fit to adopt as heterosexuals: study

Gay couples as fit to adopt as heterosexuals: study

Pop singer Elton John kisses baby Lev during a news conference at a hospital for HIV-positive children in the town of Makeyevka outside Donetsk, September 12, 2009.[Agencies]

NEW YORK - Gay or straight, the sexual orientation of adoptive parents does not have an impact on the emotional development of their children, according to a new study.

But researchers said that if parents were satisfied with the adoption process, had a stable income and functioned well as a family the risk of emotional problems in children were reduced.

"We found that sexual orientation of the adoptive parents was not a significant predictor of emotional problems," Paige Averett, an assistant professor of social work at East Carolina University, said in a statement.

"We did find, however, that age and pre-adoptive sexual abuse were," she added.

Averett, Blace Nalavany, also of East Carolina University, and Scott Ryan, dean of the University of Texas School of Social Work, questioned nearly 1,400 couples in the United States, including 155 gay and lesbian parents.

They used information from Florida's public child welfare system and data from gay and lesbian couples throughout the U.S. for the study.

Each couple was questioned about themselves and their children, the family composition and dynamics, and the history of the child before the adoption.

The researchers said the findings, which are reported in the journal Adoption Quarterly, are important because it compared gay and lesbian and heterosexual couples.

"There are implications for social work educators, adoption professionals, and policy makers in this and other recent studies," said Averett.

"We must pay attention to the data indicating that gay and lesbian parents are as fit as heterosexual parents to adopt," Averett added, "because at least 130,000 children are depending on us to act as informed advocates on their behalf."

The American Civil Liberties Union has said that laws and adoption agency policies have created obstacles for gay and lesbian couple who want to adopt children.

Ziyi: In love as always

Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi and her fiancé Vivi Nevo watch a fashion show in Milan, Italy on September 26, 2009.

Zhang Ziyi's romantic relationship with multi-millionaire Vivi Nevo may have undergone twists and turns, but the latest photos of the lovebirds prove that love is continuing between the Chinese actress and her fiancé.

A number of photos dated September 26, 2009 have emerged on the Internet, showing Zhang and Nevo watching a fashion show in Milan, Italy, their hands clasped.

This was the first time the high-profile couple was spotted together in more than four months, according to China News Service. Previously, Nevo was seen accompanying Zhang to film festivals worldwide.

Chinese tabloids are calling the couple's Milan appearance a "dramatic reunion".

Zhang, who launched an international career after playing the lead role in Ang Lee's Oscar-winning 2000 film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", began dating Vivi Nevo in 2007. She was engaged to the major Time Warner shareholder last year.

However, as fans were expecting to see Zhang tie the knot, in June this year Nevo suddenly announced a postponement to the planned August wedding, citing busy work schedules as the reason.

Zhang then returned to China promoting her latest film, a romantic comedy entitled "Sophie's Revenge". Not wearing her engagement ring, she told Chinese media, "If I were married, I would want to spend the rest of my life with my husband, just like my parents do. Although divorce is not the end of the world, I suddenly felt scared."

The remarks aroused wide speculation that Zhang's relationship was already on the edge. The actress however denied such rumors, saying "everything is alright."

The postponed wedding is still pending, though the pair avoided questions about a wedding date in Milan.

Jennifer Aniston's Bounty-ful Brad tears

Jennifer Aniston's Bounty-ful Brad tears

Jennifer Aniston broke down after a love scene reminded her of Brad Pitt.

The Hollywood actress - whose marriage to the 'Inglourious Basterds' hunk ended in 2005 - was apparently so distraught about the romantic scenes with her 'The Bounty' co-star Gerard Butler, she fled to her trailer in tears.

She reportedly told her assistant: "I need a moment. This scene reminds me of Brad and me."

On set sources claim this wasn't a one-off incident and the 40-year-old actress - who has remained single since she was dumped by singer John Mayer earlier this year - was "very fragile" during the last few months of filming.

The source added to the New York Post newspaper: "While she enjoyed flirting with Gerard on set and put a brave face on every day, privately she is still very fragile."

During production, Jennifer was romantically linked with Gerard, 38, after they were seen holding hands while on a dinner date in New York.

When Jennifer and Brad's five-year union ended, there was speculation this was down to his growing closeness to his 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' co-star Angelina Jolie - with whom he now raises six children.

NEW YORK – "Dirty Dancing" made Patrick Swayze a superstar, but when he first read the script, he found it a little clean.

The actor, who died Sept. 14 of cancer, writes in his memoir, "It seemed fluffy — nothing more than a summer-camp movie." The memoir "The Time of My Life" comes out next week, AP reports.

Swayze's reaction was completely different about another future smash, "Ghost." He immediately wanted to be in it and persuaded Jerry Zucker to cast him despite the director's skepticism that Swayze could play a sensitive leading man.

Swayze also remembered working with a then-little known Tom Cruise in Francis Coppola's adaptation of the young adult classic "The Outsiders." Cruise, Swayze said, was so "self-conscious about his teeth" that he resisted magazine photo shoots.

The rapper had been smitten with the 'Hero' singer for a long time and did everything he could to try and meet her by letting everyone know his feelings for her.

Mariah said: "He likes to say that he spoke it into existence. He told everybody who he thought might know me, 'Tell your girl Mariah that I want to talk to her.' All this stuff. I didn't know him… but I didn't know what to believe."

The pair finally met at The Teen Choice Awards in 2005, after Nick insisted on presenting her with an accolade.

Speaking to Barbara Walters on her Here's Barbara Sirius XM radio show, she revealed: "He told me that he said to the people that were doing the show, that he wouldn't do it, unless he could present my award to me. I said, 'Thank you for all the nice things that you've been saying about me.' And he said, 'I meant everything - give me a chance.' And then I didn't see him again for two years."

But they eventually got together when Mariah - who married Nick in 2008 - decided she wanted him to star in her music video for 'Bye Bye'.

She said: "I always remembered the moment. We were doing a video and there was going to be a love interest in it. And we were thinking of all different actors and people - we wanted it to look authentic. And I said, 'Oh, what about Nick Cannon?' "

LOS ANGELES – Nearly 40 years after breaking up, The Beatles are still breaking records for album sales.

EMI Group PLC says consumers in North America, Japan and the U.K. bought more than 2.25 million copies of the Fab Four's re-mastered albums in the first five days after their Sept. 9 release.

Most of the records were broken for most simultaneous titles in the top-selling charts by a single artist.

On Billboard magazine's pop catalog chart, for example, the band had 16 titles in the top 50, including all 14 re-mastered CDs and two box sets.

The Beatles' original U.K. studio albums were re-mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London over four years and released to coincide with the sale of "The Beatles: Rock Band" on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.

Mischa Barton getting 'stronger'

Mischa Barton getting 'stronger'

Mischa Barton is feeling "stronger" following her recent reported breakdown.

The former 'O.C.' star - who was placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold order and taken to Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in July - insists she has now got her life back on track.

She told Grazia magazine: "I had a bad few weeks. But you know when you are not sick anymore and you feel stronger. You know what? People do turn themselves around in a matter of a few weeks. People do get better, things get better. I'm OK now. I think the hospital visit was blown out of proportion. It was made out to seem like, you know, you are having a complete breakdown and your life is ending."

Mischa also thanked Ashton Kutcher - who is producing her new TV show 'The Beautiful Life' - and his wife Demi Moore for helping her move on from her ordeal.

She said: "There were all these questions and speculation, 'Is she OK? Is she ready to work?'

"But Ashton is an amazing guy and such a great producer. He has been so supportive recently."

The 23-year-old star previously blamed her hospitalisation on an operation to remove wisdom teeth which went wrong.

Last month, she said: "I don't know if it was an official breakdown. I don't know. I had a friend who had a quasi-nervous breakdown, but I'm not sure it's the same thing. I'm not sure I'm capable of a full-on nervous breakdown, but it was pretty bad. It didn't last that long.

It was more about the pain. I have a newfound respect for people who have chronic pain.

"I went through a terrible surgery - a wisdom tooth surgery, all four removed. It was a nightmare. I've never had surgery before - it all went wrong. So with the travel, and surgery and prep for the show - it was hell."

Jessica Simpson wines and pines for pet

Jessica Simpson wines and pines for pet

Jessica Simpson had a night out to try and take her mind off her missing dog.

The singer-and-actress was taken to Californian eatery Vino by best friend Ken Paves to cheer her up after her beloved pooch Daisy was taken by a coyote.

A source told X17online: "Jessica didn't appear to be in the best of moods. It looked like she was having a heart-to-heart with her pal Ken. And they were certainly enjoying the wine!"

Jessica, 29, revealed last week she had seen Daisy taken by the wild animal as she looked on, but is refusing to give up hope of finding her pet alive.

She wrote on her Twitter page: "Still holding out hope despite the a*sholes that say is it a dumb thing to do. Daisy is my baby... why would I stop searching? I'm a mom. (sic)"

Jessica and her family have even mocked up a poster of Daisy - who is a malti-poo, a cross between a Maltese and a Poodle - in a desperate bid to locate her.

The document includes a picture of Daisy and a banner reading: "I miss my mommy, Daisy."

It details a special email address so anyone with information can get in touch.

Last month, Jessica blogged about Daisy's sexual orientation, saying she had found happiness with a female hound called Bella.

She wrote on Twitter: "Daisy and her best friend Bella back together again. Lesbian lovas forever! (sic)"

Jackson movie to get mass worldwide premiere

Jackson movie to get mass worldwide premiere
A tribute to Michael Jackson lies on the ground outside the O2 Arena in London June 26, 2009.[Agencies]

LOS ANGELES - The Michael Jackson movie "This Is It" -- based on footage from concert rehearsals before his death in June -- will have simultaneous premieres in more than 15 cities around the world next month, the studio behind the film said on Monday.

"This Is It" opens to the general public on October 28 for a limited two-week run. While Hollywood movies often have several premieres around the world, they rarely happen at the same time.

But for "This Is It," more than 15 cities, including New York, Rio de Janeiro, London, Berlin and Seoul will host simultaneously premieres with a red carpet event in Los Angeles on October 27, said Sony Pictures, which paid $60 million for rights to the rehearsal footage. Names of the other premiere-night cities were not released.

The opening events will feature satellite transmissions of Hollywood stars arriving at the premiere in Los Angeles. London's premiere will happen after midnight local time on October 28, while Seoul's event is scheduled for the morning of that day.

In all, more than 25 cities worldwide will have premieres for the movie but not all will take place at the same time.

In the days before he died of an overdose of prescription drugs on June 25, Jackson was rehearsing for a comeback with 50 sold-out shows in London.

The $60 million movie deal was made between Jackson's estate and concert promoter AEG Live and Sony Pictures.

Based on proceeds from the movie, business deals and album sales that have arisen since Jackson's death, administrators of his estate expect to generate more than $200 million in revenue before the end of the year.

Sony Pictures is a division of Sony Co.

Jennifer Connelly OK with sex scenes

Jennifer Connelly OK with sex scenes

Jennifer Connelly wishes actors wouldn't get embarrassed by sex scenes.

The Oscar-winning actress admits getting intimate with a co-star is awkward, but insists it's nowhere near as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

She said: "Sex scenes are incredibly awkward, they're always uncomfortable. I think they're overused and people get very flustered by them.

"People don't know how to discuss them and there's a lot of embarrassment. It's not my favourite thing to do, but there are circumstances in which they make sense. I just wish people wouldn't dance around them."

The 38-year-old star's next film 'Creation' sees her starring alongside her real-life husband Paul Bettany, who plays evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin.

But even though the couple play a husband and wife in the film, they didn't shoot any steamy scenes together, something Jennifer is grateful for.

She told Britain's Guardian newspaper: "We had heard a lot of opinions about it but I wanted to work with Paul because he's a very good actor and I thought it would be a privilege to work with him.

"There are certain scenarios people don't want to see, like a married couple having sex in a film. But I don't want to see a sexy movie about Charles Darwin, and the filmmakers didn't want to make that film, so it seemed like there was nothing about our personal pairing that could take away from the film."

Brad Pitt in talks for "Sherlock Holmes" sequel

Brad Pitt in talks for

Actor Brad Pitt attends "Inglorious Basterds" premiere at Victoria Eugenia Theater during the 57th San Sebastian International Film Festival on September 18, 2009 in San Sebastian, Spain. [Agencies]

NEW YORK - Brad Pitt has had discussions with the producers of "Sherlock Holmes" to star in a sequel as the detective's nemesis Moriarty, according to people familiar with the project.

No deal is in place for Pitt, currently in theaters with "Inglourious Basterds," and there's still three months to go until the first picture is released on Christmas Day.

Robert Downey, Jr. plays Holmes in the Warner Bros. project, which Guy Ritchie directed. Jude Law plays Watson, and Rachel McAdams stars as love interest Irene Adler. Much of the talent is expected to return in the new picture, as could Ritchie as director.

Pitt has been the subject of a litany of blog rumors as appearing in several shots of "Holmes" as Moriarty, but those familiar with the script say the character is in shadow and cannot be recognized.

It's increasingly common for a studio to begin developing sequels ahead of a movie's release, enabling a second picture to get into production faster than it normally would, and at a comparatively low cost. Warners began pushing "The Hangover," as the movie's prerelease buzz began to grow, though did not close deals until after the movie had begun raking in box office dollars.

Warners is keen on developing new franchises, with Holmes -- with its broad fan base and rich source material -- considered a very appealing candidate. The project would also mean Downey would star in a second franchise, after "Iron Man," while DreamWorks could build yet another franchise around him with "Cowboys and Aliens."

"Mad Men," "30 Rock" win top Emmy awards

Tina Fey (C) stands with the cast and crew of "30 Rock" as they accept the award for best comedy series at the 61st annual Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, California September 20, 2009. [Agencies]

LOS ANGELES- The low-rated shows "30 Rock" and "Mad Men" shared the spotlight at the Emmy Awards for a second year on Sunday, but most of their stars were snubbed as the acting awards went to repeat winners or surprise choices.

Tina Fey, the creator and star of NBC's "30 Rock," failed to defend her best comic actress title. She lost to Australia's Toni Collette, who plays a woman with multiple personalities in Showtime's "United States of Tara."

Fey's co-star, Alec Baldwin, was the only one of 13 nominees from either "30 Rock" or "Mad Men" to win an acting prize, in his case for playing a bumbling network TV boss.

Still, "30 Rock" was named best comedy for a third year, and "Mad Men" best drama for a second. Both prizes were announced at the end of the three-hour ceremony.

"Phew! That was a nail-biter," said Fey, accepting the big prize for "30 Rock," which won just five of the leading 22 Emmys for which the cult favorite had been nominated.

"Mad Men," whose audience is about 2 million on the niche cable channel AMC, won just three of the 16 Emmys for which it had been nominated. Last year, the period saga made history by becoming the first series from a cable network other than HBO to win the Emmy for best drama.

"I may be the only person in the room with complete creative freedom. That's why the show is so good," said "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner, who shared the Emmy with Kater Gordon for best drama writing.

Glenn Close repeated her win for best dramatic actress for her role as a ruthless lawyer in "Damages" on the FX cable channel. Accepting her award, Close called it "the character of my lifetime."

Bryan Cranston, who plays a chemistry teacher who turns to drug dealing to pay for his medical bills in "Breaking Bad" on AMC, was also a repeat as best actor in a drama.

Cranston told reporters backstage that the "Breaking Bad" plot was "probably the worst idea for a TV show ever. But they decided to make it anyway and I'm grateful that they did."

Despite expanding the number of nominees this year to acknowledge the range of shows on more than 120 network and cable channels in the United States, upstarts like Fox's irreverent cartoon series "Family Guy" and HBO's polygamy drama "Big Love" went home empty-handed.

But Cranston said the diversity of shows meant U.S. television was in "another golden age," while Close told reporters that cable TV gave writers a creative freedom lacking on formulaic network shows.

"PUT DOWN THE REMOTE"

Host Neil Patrick Harris, star of the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother," kicked off the live telecast with a comic song and dance routine called "Put down the Remote" that urged viewers to resist the urge to switch channels or go online.

Last year's Emmy telecast attracted the smallest audience in the awards show's history, with just 12.2 million viewers.

Kristin Chenoweth won best supporting comic actress for "Pushing Daisies," a show canceled earlier this year by ABC.

"I'm unemployed now, so I'd like to be on 'Mad Men,' Chenoweth joked, adding "Thank you so much to the Academy for recognizing a show that's no longer on the air."

HBO's "Grey Gardens" -- about the eccentric relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy -- won six Emmys, including best TV movie. But the BBC production of Charles Dickens tale "Little Dorritt," aired on PBS, did better with seven Emmys, including outstanding miniseries.

HBO is a unit of Time Warner Inc. ABC is owned by the Walt Disney Co; NBC is a division of the NBC Universal unit of General Electric Co; Fox and FX are part of News Corp. Showtime and CBS is part of CBS Corp; AMC is owned by Cablevision Systems Corp.

Madonna to duet with Janet Jackson

Madonna to duet with Janet Jackson
Madonna poses in the press room at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards in New York, September 13, 2009. [Agencies]

Madonna is to duet with Janet Jackson.

The two singers are working on a tribute to Janet's late brother Michael Jackson after bonding over dinner after Sunday's (13.09.09) MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), which saw the 'Together Again' star perform 'Scream', a track originally recorded with her sibling, and Madonna make a tearful speech about her regret at "abandoning" the pop icon before his death.

A source said: "It was a meeting of two great musical minds. Madonna was so impressed with Janet's tribute to Michael that they started talking about how great it would be to honour him by doing something together.

"With that one performance Janet proved she's back on top of her game. And who better to join forces with than Madonna?

"There was definitely something very interesting being planned between them."

Speaking at the awards ceremony, which was held in New York, Madonna admitted she was only attending the bash to pay her respects to Michael.

She told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "Now I've finally had chance to say farewell to my dear friend. I can now say I have paid my respects to Michael. That's why I'm here. To say goodbye.

"And Janet's performance was amazing - just the perfect tribute to her brother."

Madonna's manager Guy Oseary recently revealed that the '4 Minutes' singer had hoped to join Michael on stage during his 'This Is It' London residency.

He wrote on Twitter: "A month ago, Madonna told me she wanted to do a surprise performance at one of Michael Jackson's UK shows."

Meanwhile, Madonna is already planning a stint in the spotlight for adopted daughter Mercy, four.

She said: "I adore Mercy, she's such a sweet child. She's doing so well. Hopefully when she's older she can be in my videos like the others. She could have some moves. Who knows?"

Modest actress Charlize Theron

Modest actress Charlize Theron
South African actress Charlize Theron arrives for the premiere party of the film "The Burning Plain" in Los Angeles, September 14, 2009. [Agencies]

Charlize Theron is not "an exhibitionist".

The 'Burning Plain' actress - who appears naked in the first scene of the movie, and has also stripped off in 'Monster' and 'The Devil's Advocate' - insists she only flashes flesh on film if it is integral to the storyline.

She explained: "I'm not some exhibitionist. I think people think I just love walking around naked.

"When you start making it about yourself, you stand in the way of doing your job. I have to sit in an editing room with the director and a bunch of execs, and if I had to sit there and think about myself and these men watching me, I think that would make me insecure. I'm just like every other girl out there. I would cringe."

The 34-year-old actress added making 'The Burning Plain' - in which she stars as Sylvia, a woman who found out her mother was having an affair when she was a teenager - made her think about her own upbringing.

Charlize's parents had a turbulent relationship, culminating in her father being shot dead by her mother after he attacked her when Charlize was 15.

She told the USA Today newspaper: "I looked at my parents and I was so judgmental, and you don't understand the struggles of what it is to be in a marriage and be committed and raise children and to be part of a family.

"Their marriage wasn't great. As a child, you see things very differently, and then I got older and I went, 'Wow, that's amazing.' You start going out with a couple of boys, and some of them aren't so nice. There's a lot more that plays into this whole relationship thing than you think."

Aniston, Eckhart fail to click in "Love Happens"

Aniston, Eckhart fail to click in
Cast members Jennifer Aniston (L) and Aaron Eckhart of the new film "Love Happens" pose at the film's premiere in Los Angeles September 15, 2009.[Agencies]

LOS ANGELES - The generic title is a good indication of this movie's blandness and predictability. "Love Happens" might just as well have been called "Falling in Love" or "Love Affair," but those titles have been used.

"Love Happens" isn't even an accurate description of the movie, which opens Friday via Universal. Although it is being sold as a romantic comedy, Jennifer Aniston's role is distinctly secondary, and she has zero chemistry with Aaron Eckhart.

He plays Burke Ryan, a self-help guru and best-selling author trying to help people recover from the devastating loss of a loved one. Burke still is wrestling with his wife's death three years earlier; his grief prompted him to launch a lucrative business. While he's conducting a weeklong seminar in Seattle, the city where his wife died, he meets Aniston's Eloise, a local florist, and she helps him to start heeding the advice he has been feeding to others.

But the romance seems more of an afterthought than a central strand of the story. Although Aniston's name on the marquee might draw a few people to the theater, "Love" isn't strong enough as comedy or drama to sustain audience interest.

The script by Brandon Camp and Mike Thompson (who also composed another piece of inspirational goop, "Dragonfly") fails to make the basic premise credible. Because Burke mainly spews cliches about finding the strength to move on, it's hard to understand how he has developed such a passionate following. Perhaps if the film were conceived as a satire of the self-help movement, this wouldn't matter, but we are meant to take Burke seriously as a true savant who can heal everyone but himself. But his nuggets of advice are so superficial that we never really believe in Burke's celebrity status. While exploring Burke's psychological history, the film builds toward a surprise revelation that has been pretty transparent from the start. There simply isn't enough drama to sustain a nearly two-hour movie, and Camp's plodding direction only makes the picture seem more tedious.

Eckhart and Aniston are likable performers, but they don't click as a romantic duo. Martin Sheen brings his innate dignity to the role of Burke's father-in-law, who magically turns up just when Burke is in desperate need of a hug. The best performance comes from John Carroll Lynch as a grieving father; he coaxes the most poignant drama from the undernourished script. Frances Conroy has a brief scene as Eloise's mother; clearly, most of her part was left on the cutting-room floor.

The film is a glossy but uninspired production, with stock shots of the Seattle Space Needle to provide a sense of place. Editor Dana E. Glauberman, who did a crack job of editing "Up in the Air," can't find the right pacing for this lugubrious drama. The film bears some resemblance to "As Good As It Gets" and last summer's "The Answer Man," two other films about hypocritical literary lions, but it cries out for the wit that enlivened those movies.

LOS ANGELES - British actress Kate Winslet lead the pack of People magazine's 10 best-dressed women of 2009, with U.S. first lady Michelle Obama chosen for "best accessible glamour."

Although the list, released Wednesday, does not have numerical ranking, Winslet, 33, who won an Oscar in February for playing a dour Nazi in "The Reader," was deemed to be the best-dressed woman on the red carpet on 2009 "with her unique brand of sexy sophistication, modern Hollywood glamour and those enviable curves."

People named Reese Witherspoon as having the "best short dresses," "High School Musical" actress Vanessa Hudgens as best hippie chic, and Freida Pinto, the Indian star of Oscar-winning movie "Slumdog Millionaire," for having the best use of color.

The annual best- and worst-dressed double issue, on newsstands Friday, also acknowledged the impact on fashion of the Emmy-award winning TV series "Mad Men," set in the 1960s, whose cigarette pants and sheath dresses have inspired new designs by Michael Kors and Tory Burch.

Ferragamo targets Asia's charitable rich in downturn

Ferragamo targets Asia's charitable rich in downturn

A model presents a creation during the launch of the Salvatore Ferragamo Spring-Summer 2007/08 collection in Singapore November 6, 2007.[Agencies]

SINGAPORE - Italian luxury goods group Salvatore Ferragamo has designed a limited collection to raise funds for breast cancer groups, targeting wealthy -- and charitable -- Asians who appear immune to the economic downturn.

The Pink Collection will go on sale in October, designated in several countries as breast cancer awareness month, at selected Ferragamo boutiques in China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan markets), Korea, Singapore, India and Australia.

"Asia is waking up from last year's financial disaster much faster than Europe or the United States," Michelle Ng, regional managing director for Ferragamo, told Reuters.

"Right now, we're seeing better performance and sales in Asia than anywhere else, due to the new wealth in the region and also the growing middle class which aspires to buy designer goods."

Asia accounts for nearly half of the company's global turnover.

Luxury goods have largely fallen out of favor during the global economic crisis, but Asia has proven to be a bright spot for retailers, as many of the region's economies, and shoppers' appetite, were not so badly affected.

Ng cited research showing that up to 40 percent of purchases of luxury goods in Europe were done by Asian visitors. The Florence-based Ferragamo is looking to emerging markets such as China and Latin America for expansion, with China set to become its second biggest market after the United States.

Valeria Azario, Asia-Pacific regional marketing director, said Ferragamo has been involved in raising funds and awareness for breast cancer for years: Fiamma Ferragamo, the daughter of founder Salvatore died of the disease in 1998, aged 57.

"But this is the first time we have designed a special collection for breast cancer, and we're launching it in Asia because it's the place where business is growing," she added.

The collection includes a pink, crystal-embellished edition of Ferragamo's signature ballerina shoe as well as a perfume, a watch, a T-shirt and a canvas tote, with prices ranging from 360 Singapore dollars ($256) to 1,500 Singapore dollars.

SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK – Fierce is the battle against a pop diva's perfume.

Abercrombie & Fitch, the apparel chain known for its racy marketing and casual look, has sued Beyonce Knowles to try and stop the singer from launching a new line of fragrances.

In a federal lawsuit filed on Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, Abercrombie claims a fragrance under the singer's "Sasha Fierce" label "poses a likelihood of confusion" with the retailer's own "Fierce" brand.

In English vernacular "fierce" means "cool" or "fabulous."

Media reports say Knowles, the former Destiny's Child frontwoman whose hits include "Single Ladies," "Crazy in Love" and "If I Were a Boy," plans to start selling a fragrance in early 2010 in partnership with perfumers Coty Inc.

Abercrombie said such confusion could deprive it of control over a trademark it has used since 2002, and perhaps cost it sales. The lawsuit seeks to halt potential trademark infringement, unfair competition and deceptive trade practices.

But on Wednesday, Coty executives said they do not intend to name the fragrance after Beyonce's alter-ego -- Sasha Fierce -- and hence it would pose no threat to Abercrombie's product.

"The terms Fierce and Sasha Fierce are not being used as names of a Beyonce fragrance," read a statement from Coty.

A publicist for Knowles, Alan Nierob, confirmed that.

Best known for clothing sold to teens and college-age adults, New Albany, Ohio-based Abercrombie said it has sold more than $190 million worth of fragrance under the Fierce name, and expects $64 million of sales in 2009.

Abercrombie sells Fierce at more than 350 retail stores and on its website, typically for $40 to $70 in bottles featuring a young man's muscular, nude torso. The fragrance is sprayed throughout stores via a scent machine or by store employees.

"A&F's intent is that all garments that leave the store have the FIERCE scent attached to them," the complaint said.

The company markets Fierce as a men's cologne whose "fresh citrus aroma" and "warm musky subtleness" will "naturally draw her curiosity because of its seductive nature."

Abercrombie may have heard that a competing Knowles fragrance was in the works "but it turned out to be wrong," said Jed Wakefield, chair of the trademark litigation group at Fenwick & West, who had no inside knowledge of the case.

"There are cases where a trademark owner learns about plans by a junior user to start use and they rush into court to get an injunction before it starts," Wakefield said. "That's not uncommon in trademark litigation where there has been pre-release publicity or the like."

WHO IS MORE FIERCE?

Knowles, often known solely by her first name, is one of the world's best-known singers, after having risen to fame as lead singer of the group Destiny's Child.

Last November, her album "I am ... Sasha Fierce" debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. On Sunday, the song "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" from that album won the Video of the Year award at the MTV Video Music Awards.

"Single Ladies" bounced back into the spotlight during the recent MTV Video Music Awards, when singer Kanye West bounded onto stage in the middle of an acceptance speech by Taylor Swift, interrupting the singer to say that Beyonce's "Single Ladies" was "one of the best videos of all time."

The case is Abercrombie & Fitch Co v. Knowles, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Ohio (Columbus), No. 09-807.

BOSTON – Mary Travers, who as one-third of the hugely popular 1960s folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary helped popularize such tunes as "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" and "If I Had a Hammer," died in a Connecticut hospital Wednesday after battling leukemia for several years. She was 72.

The band's publicist, Heather Lylis, said Travers died at Danbury Hospital.

Bandmate Peter Yarrow said that in her final months, Travers handled her declining health with bravery and generosity, showing her love to friends and family "with great dignity and without restraint."

"It was, as Mary always was, honest and completely authentic," he said. "That's the way she sang, too; honestly and with complete authenticity."

Noel "Paul" Stookey, the trio's other member, praised Travers for her inspiring activism, "especially in her defense of the defenseless."

"I am deadened and heartsick beyond words to consider a life without Mary Travers and honored beyond my wildest dreams to have shared her spirit and her career," he said.

Mary Allin Travers was born on Nov. 9, 1936 in Louisville, Ky., the daughter of journalists who moved the family to Manhattan's bohemian Greenwich Village. She quickly became enamored with folk performers like the Weavers, and was soon performing with Pete Seeger, a founding member of the Weavers who lived in the same building as the Travers family.

With a group called the Song Swappers, Travers backed Seeger on one album and two shows at Carnegie Hall. She also appeared (as one of a group of folk singers) in a short-lived 1958 Broadway show called "The Next President," starring comedian Mort Sahl.

It wasn't until she met up with Yarrow and Stookey that Travers would taste success on her own. Yarrow was managed by Albert B. Grossman, who later worked in the same capacity for Bob Dylan.

In the book "Positively 4th Street" by David Hajdu, Travers recalled that Grossman's strategy was to "find a nobody that he could nurture and make famous."

The budding trio, boosted by the arrangements of Milt Okun, spent seven months rehearsing in her Greenwich Village apartment before their 1961 public debut at the Bitter End.

Their beatnik look — a tall blonde flanked by a pair of goateed guitarists — was a part of their initial appeal. As The New York Times critic Robert Shelton put it not long afterward, "Sex appeal as a keystone for a folk-song group was the idea of the group's manager ... who searched for months for `the girl' until he decided on Miss Travers."

The trio mingled their music with liberal politics, both onstage and off. Their version of "If I Had a Hammer" became an anthem for racial equality. Other hits included "Lemon Tree," "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and "Puff (The Magic Dragon.)"

They were early champions of Dylan and performed his "Blowin' in the Wind" at the August 1963 March on Washington.

And they were vehement in their opposition to the Vietnam War, managing to stay true to their liberal beliefs while creating music that resonated in the American mainstream.

The group collected five Grammy Awards for their three-part harmony on enduring songs like "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" and "Blowin' in the Wind."

At one point in 1963, three of their albums were in the top six Billboard best-selling LPs as they became the biggest stars of the folk revival movement.

It was heady stuff for a trio that had formed in the early 1960s in Greenwich Village, running through simple tunes like "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

Their debut album came out in 1962, and immediately scored a pair of hits with their versions of "If I Had a Hammer" and "Lemon Tree." The former won them Grammys for best folk recording, and best performance by a vocal group.

"Moving" was the follow-up, including the hit tale of innocence lost, "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" — which reached No. 2 on the charts, and generated since-discounted reports that it was an ode to marijuana.

Album No. 3, "In the Wind," featured three songs by the 22-year-old Dylan. "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" and "Blowin' in the Wind" both reached the top 10, bringing Dylan's material to a massive audience; the latter shipped 300,000 copies during one two-week period.

"Blowin' In the Wind" became an another civil rights anthem, and Peter, Paul and Mary fully embraced the cause. They marched with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Ala., and performed with him in Washington.

In a 1966 New York Times interview, Travers said the three worked well together because they respected one another. "There has to be a certain amount of love just in order for you to survive together," she said. "I think a lot of groups have gone down the tubes because they were not able to relate to one another."

With the advent of the Beatles and Dylan's switch to electric guitar, the folk boom disappeared. Travers expressed disdain for folk-rock, telling the Chicago Daily News in 1966 that "it's so badly written. ... When the fad changed from folk to rock, they didn't take along any good writers."

But the trio continued their success, scoring with the tongue-in-cheek single "I Dig Rock and Roll Music," a gentle parody of the Mamas and the Papas, in 1967 and the John Denver-penned "Leaving on a Jet Plane" two years later.

They also continued as boosters for young songwriters, recording numbers written by then-little-known Gordon Lightfoot and Laura Nyro.

In 1969, the group earned their final Grammy for "Peter, Paul and Mommy," which won for best children's album. They disbanded in 1971, launching solo careers — Travers released five albums — that never achieved the heights of their collaborations.

Over the years they enjoyed several reunions, including a performance at a 1978 anti-nuclear benefit organized by Yarrow and a 35th anniversary album, "Lifelines," with fellow folkies Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Dave Van Ronk and Seeger. A boxed set of their music was released in 2004.

They remained politically active as well, performing at the 1995 anniversary of the Kent State shootings and performing for California strawberry pickers.

Travers had undergone a successful bone marrow transplant to treat her leukemia and was able to return to performing after that.

"It was like a miracle," Travers told The Associated Press in 2006. "I'm just feeling fabulous. What's incredible is someone has given your life back. I'm out in the garden today. This time last year I was looking out a window at a hospital." She also said she told the marrow donor "how incredibly grateful I was."

But by mid-2009, Yarrow told WTOP radio in Washington that her condition had worsened again and he thought she would no longer be able to perform.

Travers lived for many years in Redding, Conn. She is survived by her husband, Ethan Robbins and daughters, Alicia and Erika.
