One of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the world, the 66th Venice Film Festival kicks off this year on August 27 and runs through to September 6, 2008 when the complete group of winners are announced.
Named to head the international jury that will award the coveted Golden Lion in Venice this year is German director Wim Wenders, who took home the Golden Lion for "The State of Things" in 1982.
Of the 21 films competing for the coveted Golden Lion award, American entries include Rachel is Getting Married starring Anne Hathaway and Debra Winger; Kathryn Bigelow's Hurt Locker, starring Ralph Fiennes; and Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, with Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei.
Opening the festival is the world premiere of the Coen brothers "Burn After Reading" - a film not in competition - starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney.
Venice Film Festival Awards
|
Now heading into its 7th decade, the Venice Film Festival has changed markedly over the recent past - from a strictly European lineup to feature a varied and outstanding international venue. This effectively makes the festival one of the earliest predictors of winners for other film top awards worldwide, including leading Hollywood contenders at the Oscars. The principal awards in Venice are the Leone d'Oro (Golden Lion), which is awarded for best film, and the Coppa Volpi (Volpi Cup) for best actor and actress.
