OK, hands up if you are man enough to admit liking Abba. I don’t know if I am man enough to do so. Maybe appreciate the song writing skills of the Bs of the band, but that’s about it.There was only so much I could handle of that duo of voices. By, so much, I mean about half a song. Then I started to go nuts a bit.
I did like Chess, the musical that Anderson and Ulvaeus did post-Abba. That One Night In Bangkok song rocks! So maybe my reservations about Abba are down to the performance of Fältskog and Lyngstad. Certainly is a possibility that that could be it. That and the clothes. They drove everybody to fashion-induced screams.
So with that I was prepared to give the Mamma Mia soundtrack a listen as it’s not Fältskog and Lyngstad actually singing the songs. I guess there’s not a need to have a soundtrack of the originals. There’ll be plenty of reissues for that.
The first thing that strikes you about the soundtrack is that the music production does its best to sound like the original productions. They may even be note perfect, although the production is not quite the same. It’s damn close though. Dancing Queen departs
With a full cast including Amanda Seyfried, Ashley Lilley, Rachel McDowall, Julie Walters, Meryl Streep and Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan . . . sorry what? Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan?
Singing?
Singing Abba songs?
I have yet to see the movie, but I thought they would be just be making up the numbers for the women to sing, but no. Brosnan joins in with SOS, and When All Is Said and Done while Firth gets his vocal cords around Our Last Summer.
Oh and Stellan Skarsgård also turns up as the token Swedish guy.
With a full cast of singers the soundtrack doesn’t sound like a retro 70s pop album, but sounds exactly like a stage musical. It really shouldn’t be a surprise us that Anderson and Ulvaeus had a hit Broadway musical or two on their hands.
What strikes you about the soundtrack is how they sound so much like a Broadway musical production. The songs are a perfect fit for the stage. It’s as if they belonged on Broadway from the beginning. I guess it’s all that sing duo style that the band used most of the time. The fit is remarkable.
Unfortunately that means that the music drives me insane and I hate it. Maybe you will too.

this is one of the few plays i've actually seen, which ended up being great... it's funny to think of ol' Pierce taking a stab at singing though, yeeesh
