Actress eyes top award

Acclaimed mainland actress Jiang Wenli's writing and directing debut Lan (Women Tianshang Jian) will compete for the top award at the 14th Pusan International Film Festival, which started on Oct 8 and runs for nine days in South Korea.

As one of the most popular actresses on the Chinese mainland, Jiang (pictured) recounts a childhood spent with her beloved grandfather in the film. She made the film to commemorate the man, who raised her and passed away 30 years ago.

Jiang's film will compete with 11 contenders in New Currents, the festival's main competition session.

The film was shot in Jiang's hometown in Anhui province, and some of her grandfather's friends appeared as guest stars.

After starring in several popular films and TV series, Jiang was crowned Film Queen at the 2nd Rome International Film Festival for her performance in the film And the Spring Comes (Li Chun), in which she played a small-town teacher who dreams of becoming a soprano.
